Iran has been in the technology news a lot lately. From reports of creating their own Internet, to various cyber attacks against the country, they have been making headlines frequently. Earlier this month a video game designer was sentenced to death for allegedly spying for the CIA. Now Guardian is reporting that another developer will be executed, this time for allegedly developing pornographic websites.

While details of the case are sketchy, it appears that 35-year-old Saeed Malekpour was arrested in Iran in 2008 for developing a piece of software that makes uploading photos to websites easier. According to his wife, Malekpour was unaware that the software was being used for a pornography site and that he was not running the site himself. The official charges state that Malekpour was, “designing and moderating adult content websites, acting against the national security, insulting and desecrating the principles of Islam, and agitating the public mind.

The death sentence was announced in early January but after an outpour of public support, the Iranian supreme court announced that the charges would be reevaluated. Now it appears that the sentencing is complete and the ruling was upheld.

It’s shocking in today’s day and age to think that developing a piece of non-malicious code could possibly lead to imprisonment, let alone death. There’s no explanation on why the court decided to uphold the ruling after the June announcement.

Nima is that you?

I think they have "enlarged" the issue too much, it is true, yes but not as big as explained above, I don't know him, he may works for YouP***, who know? It is really obvious that his wife told them that, to just get rid of this, otherwise, it might be something else. ;)

Its all OK because your beloved USA seems to be overstepping its mark on so many issues. For example it believes that its own laws overrule those of the prevailing country. In fact it tried to implement this idea into law. Luckily the internet had this big "blackout" campaign and this has been shelved for at least the moment.

Each country has its own laws, its residents should abide by them and be fully of aware of them.

98% of the world population is governed by the remaining 2%.

It seems to me that this is a recipe for corruption if I ever saw one.

I do not blame an entire country of people for anything, only its' contribution to the 2%.

I think it is time the world cleaned out its' closet.

Along with boundaries, all vice would have to be removed simultaneously for it work. Otherwise, we'll just have a huge civil war.

I have considerably undermined the political influence behind this article, and I hope no one feels offended by it.

This article was meant to spread awareness in current events, not a comparison of governments.

I thanks those of you that came to clarify that point, and help clear misconceptions.

I agree with you, funny how the 2% seems to need imaginary lines in order to maintain control.

I do agree that civil laws need to be for the benifit of everyone, that is how a civilization can maintain itself.

It just seems to me that over the years, laws have been made to "protect" the very corruption that we all need to be rid of.

As Nima said above, it will happen one day. It has to, otherwise our species will not advance anywhere beyond where we are at now.

As my last personal opinion on this, I would be proud to sit down at a table and break bread with all of you.
