Study: The Internet had 2.1 billion users in 2011

A new study claims that in 2011 there were 2.1 billion Internet users worldwide, with 44 percent of those users based in Asia. The new study also has a number of other Internet user statistics.

How many people actually used the Internet in 2011? According to a new collection of statistics by the web site Pingdom, the number is actually 2.1 billion users worldwide. The report claims that 44 percent of those users, a cool 922.2 million people, are based in Asia; Europe is second with 23 percent, or 476.2 million people, of all Internet users; and North America is third with 10 percent or 271.1 million users.

The report is full of other interesting stats about the Internet as it stood at the end of last year, including these numbers:

• 95.5 million .com-based domain names were live by the end of 2011.
  
• There were 1.2 billion active mobile broadband subscriptions at the end of last year
  
• There were 555 million web sites by the end of 2011 and 300 million of them were added last year.
  
• There was a massive 239.1 percent increase in the number of Apache-based web sites in 2011.
  
• 3.146 billion email accounts have been established worldwide by the end of last year.
  
• The most popular email client, with 27.6 percent of the market, is Microsoft Outlook.
  
• 71 percent of all email traffic in the world in November 2011 is considered to be spam.
