WARSAW—A Polish military prosecutor shot himself in the head Monday during a break in a press conference in western Poland after delivering an agitated statement to reject allegations that his department had broken the law.

"Let me catch my breath," he said during the conference, asking reporters to leave the room for five minutes before a round of questions. He then shot himself.

He had defended his probe to reveal sources of media leaks from the continuing criminal inquiry into the plane crash that in April 2010 killed Poland's President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others.

Mr. Przybyl, a lawyer whose military rank corresponds to that of a colonel, took about a quarter of an hour to read a statement dismissing allegations that his office acted in violation of the law while trying to identify the source of leaks from the crash probe. He said he had wanted the leaks to stop because they had irked Russian prosecutors, who shared information with Poland from their inquiry into the plane crash.

At the end of his statement, he asked for a break and instructed journalists to leave their equipment in the room. Seconds after the door was closed, a shot could be heard in a recording from a TV camera left on. The reporters were seen rushing back into the room, grabbing their video equipment, and leaning over Mr. Przybyl's body.

The prosecutor was resuscitated and rushed to a hospital. A spokesman for the local military prosecutor's office, Slawomir Schewe, said Mr. Przybyl had survived the suicide attempt and received treatment for a wound to the head.

Prosecutors appeared divided over the statement Mr. Przybyl had made in his defense. According to media reports, his unit didn't get a court order before seeking phone records in the case.

Prosecutor General Andrzej Seremet told reporters Monday some of the actions the military prosecutors took had lacked legal grounds. But Krzysztof Parulski, Poland's chief military prosecutor, said civilian prosecutors shouldn't comment publicly on the work of their military counterparts.

Nearly two years after the plane crash in which President Kaczynski died, criminal investigations in both Poland and Russia continue, with Russian prosecutors sharing its findings with Poland.

The two countries differ as to the reasons for the incident. A Moscow-based committee of investigators pointed to an error by the Polish pilots. A commission led by the Polish interior minister agreed that numerous mistakes had been made by the Polish side before and during the fatal flight, but insisted last year that Russian air controllers had made blunders that contributed to the crash.
