It didn't take long — mere seconds, in fact — to create a new hole in the skyline of Houston's downtown district.

Demolition crews used high powered explosives to implode the 20-storey skyscraper that had been a landmark of the district's landscape for the past 60 years.

The Prudential Insurance Company of America built the 500,000-square-foot modernist skyscraper in 1952 to serve as its southwest regional headquarters.

The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center bought the building in 1974 and made it the center's main building in 1980 before vacating and closing the building in April 2010.

Cracks in the foundation were too costly to repair, officials said, so the building was razed to make way for a new clinic.

Hundreds of spectators gathered as early as 5am to watch the demolition.
