A Spanish village that was painted blue for The Smurfs 3D movie is to keep the colour after an unexpected tourism boom.

The buildings of Juzcar, near Malaga, were supposed to be returned to their white-washed former glory once filming was finished.

But, in a referendum, residents have voted 141 in favour and just 33 against to remain the world's only Smurf village, reports The Independent.

Previously, about 300 tourists a year would pass through Juzcar but about 80,000 have visited in the last six months to see 'Smurftown' for themselves.

The village has embraced its new role, holding events such as a Smurf moonlight fun run, Smurf painting competitions and Smurf trade fairs.

Juzcar's 175 buildings were all painted Smurf blue for the movie. Even the church and gravestones were transformed, with 4,000 litres of blue paint.

Juzcar mayor David Fernandez said the referendum ran "smoothly but with a great deal of excitement" with many villagers dressing up as Smurfs for the ballot.

Mr Fernandez had earlier written a lengthy pro-Smurf column on the town's website. "Our blue friends are ecologists and enthusiastic mycologists (toadstool and fungus fans), just like us," he said.

No, tell me oh great and wise one...why are we blue?

From my point of view, yellow, brown, black and white have been taken.

Seemed logical to be blue B)
