Nvidia, the Main Cause of Vista Crashes

Wanna know what causes Vista to crash? (do we ever )... Well apparently Nvidia (yeah right), at least that’s what happened to nearly 30% of all crashes in Vista that have been reported.

NVIDIA had significant problems when it came time to transition its shiny, new G80 architecture from Windows XP to Windows Vista. The company’s first G80-compatible Vista driver ended up being delayed from December to the end of January, and even then was available only as a beta download. In this case, full compatibility and stability did not come quickly, and the Internet is scattered with reports detailing graphics driver issues when using G80 processors for the entirely of 2007. There was always a question, however, of whether or not the problems were really that bad, or if reporting bias was painting a more negative picture of the current situation than what was actually occurring.

Microsoft’s data strongly indicates that the problems were real. Damon Poeter at CRN dug through the documentation to find that on page 47 of the PDF, NVIDIA drivers were identified as the cause of over 479,000 crashes, or just under 29 percent of all the crashes Microsoft logged. Microsoft’s own drivers follow, at 17.9 percent, and the “Unknown” category takes third place at 17 percent. ATI is in fourth place (9.3 percent) and Intel in fifth place (8.83 percent).

MicroShit...keep blaming it on others
The data was collected by Microsoft, and was ordered to be made public by a Judge regarding the ongoing “Vista Capable” lawsuit.

M$ did not intend/want it to be out....

haha, i always beleived in ATI; i never liked Nvidia, and besides that since ATI is the supported Graphics Card for Vista, so thats enough indication of a better support

Nice one zeus!

Microsoft might not be the cause of these incompatibilities, but still the they're both responsible: NVIDIA and Microsoft. Because those drivers did work on XP. If Microsoft made Vista as compatible/good as XP then these problems wouldn't occur.

"Those drivers" are not the ones that can b installed on vista..

One gets different drivers for Vista and XP.. graphics are quite differently implemented on XP and Vista.

So driver development for nVidia is quite new... on Vista.. will take time to stabalize...

Vista as a whole is a bloatware.... :)

Its similar to Nero... we luv the Micro version but how many use the whole package ?

have not done a complete install since the very first version of vLite...

Have a ~700Mb Vista installation file...

Havnt seen a BSOD yet in the last 16 months on my Vista...

Havnt seen anything close to the pic on top... :D

For me it works just like an XP with Aero enabled

17% Unknown, aka - its our fault but we need someone else to have a higher number than us.

or

17% of the time we have no freaking clue what we are doing, and another 17% of the time we know what we are doing but we still screw it up.

Just an Update

Charlie Miller, with Independent Security Evaluators (ISE), is the hacker that claimed a $10,000 prize and a MacBook Air, and revealed to ComputerWorld that he and his team chose to own Leopard because it was less of a challenge than Vista SP1 or Ubuntu. Miller exploited a zero-day vulnerability in Safari 3.1.

"It was the easiest one of the three. We wanted to spend as little time as possible coming up with an exploit, so we picked Mac OS X. We sat down about three weeks ago and decided we wanted to throw our hats into the ring. It took us a couple of days to find something, then the rest of the week to work up an exploit and test it. It took us maybe a week altogether," Miller stated.

On the third day of CanSecWest 2008, Vista SP1 Ultimate was also hacked, but not through a hole in the operating system's components. A zero-day vulnerability in Adobe's Flash was exploited in order to compromise Vista.

Vista kept restarting... the hackers didnt have time to do anything to it. ;) :sneaky:

I personally feel that the reason why people like Apple right now is that they control what hardware goes into their computers, so they can optimize their software for that hardware.

Windows is a MUCH more open OS in that regard, and I think M$ deserves at least a little bit of credit for "manning up" to that level of complexity.

If Apple starts selling their OS for any assemblage of parts as MS does, they'll draw the same ire that goes at M$...

Never thought of it that way zeus, but sure is true! Apple has a much easier job than MS has... Well, i agree with you that you can't really blame all the problems on them, but i think they shouldn't release an OS when it's still in beta(like) phase!

That would be a problem with your graphics card drivers most likely.
