Samsung sells a lot of mobile phones. How many? Reuters reports that the company announced today that it has now sold over 300 million mobile handsets for the first time in Samsung's history. In fact the 300 million sales mark was reached at the end of November, which means that that number could be much higher by the end of 2011.

In 2010, Samsung sold 280 million handsets worldwide. The company is now the second biggest seller, in terms of volume. Much of the sales success in 2011 came from sales of the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II smartphones. The Android-powered Galaxy S II has now sold over 10 million units since Samsung launched the phone back in April. The phone only went on sale here in the US last September.

Samsung's next big flagship phone is the Galaxy Nexus, which is the first smartphone that runs on Google's Android 4.0 operating system. The smartphone went on sale in the UK and other parts of Europe at the end of November and last week went on sale in Canada. The smartphone is supposed to be sold here in the US via Verizon Wireless. However, as we have reported before, Verizon has yet to put the Galaxy Nexus on sale, despite reports that the phone is in stock in at least some of Verizon's retail stores.
