Comcast Says Subscribers Are More Important Than Tiered Data Pricing

The sky is falling for movie lovers! The post office recently announced that it was closing down nearly half of its processing centers starting in early in 2012, which could eliminate next-day delivery services – and add an extra day of delay to Netflix deliveries. No worries, you can just shift the slack to streaming, right? (Possibly) wrong – as we recently reported, ISPs are considering implementing tiered data pricing to squeeze more cash out of heavy media streamers. So is all lost? Could your ABC Family Movies addiction be in danger of extinction? Not if you’re a Comcast customer. The company apparently has no plans of switching to tiered data pricing.

“We don’t want to disrupt the consumer experience,” CEO Michael Angelakis said at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference earlier in the week. GigaOm reports that Comcast feels that changing to a tiered pricing structure could cause customers to stop signing up for the company’s high-speed data service.

President Neil Smit put thing even more clearly. “We don’t want to nickel-and-dime customers at this point.”

Whew! That’s a breath of fresh air, and it’s surprising that it’s coming from Comcast, given the customer service horror stories that are often associated with the company. But before you get too excited, remember that no tiers doesn’t mean no restrictions: Comcast currently imposes a 250GB/mo. bandwidth cap on its customers – a fairly generous cap, but a cap nonetheless.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that just sounds like a bunch of :shit: Wasn't Comcast one of the first ISPs in the USA to impose monthly data caps?

"..we don't want to nickel-and-dime customers at this point." pretty much translate to we won't pull this trick out of our asses until we get our desired customer base and the competition is out of the question.

They will say they won't do tiered pricing, they'll just lower their caps bit by bit until its impossible to stream and not go over, and therefore pay more. Yes, they were one of the first to cap stuff.

I think so too when I first heard about even lower caps in Canada's and this article: It could be worse: data caps around the world

It's only a matter of time, unless some legislation or regulation put the ISPs in check.

Here is a comic that I found depressingly funny:

Yep...Canada isps are baaad. I have a 30Mb down - 7Mb up docsis3 cable connection. The cap is 250gb for most customers...but if you happen to be on a node in a lowly populated neighborhood with low usage (esp. in rural areas like mine) and you have your phone, TV and top tier internet all bundled together, your limit will be much higher but they won't admit it. The week after I upgraded to the triple bundle my bandwidth meter suddenly disappeared from my account page completely. :D I have been hitting 400GB+ a month ever since and have not gotten a warning yet. I figure if I stay below 500gb (2 x the limit) they won't say anything...fingers crossed. If they do call, I can always say I don't know what my usage is cuz the meter is gone or 'someone must have cracked my wifi connection'...mauhaha...

any band cappings is tier payment system. its wrong and as netflex studies showed the last mile cost less then half a penny for these bstards. btw with 3D movies for netflex and others that will mean 45 GB easy for blue ray 3D streaming on netflex and its cousins. so 250 GB is nothing in the end. when the isps did the band cappign they seriously hurt the internet business.
