HAVANA (Reuters) - Communist Cuba has authorized the sale of computers, DVD and video players and other electrical appliances in the first sign President Raul Castro is moving to lift some restrictions on daily life.

"Based on the improved availability of electricity the government at the highest level has approved the sale of some equipment which was prohibited," said an internal government memo seen by Reuters.

It listed computers, video and DVD players, 19-inch and 24-inch television sets, electric pressure cookers and rice cookers, electric bicycles, car alarms and microwaves that can now be freely bought by Cubans.

well it might mean some more work for us here in the US but i dought it though. if they want to truly by what they want, they schould lift bans left and right then maybe things will get better.

Speaking of bans....the US has had an embargo on Cuba for like 50 years..lift that and things might get better too and befor you say anything China has been selling weapons to the people who have been killing American and Canadian soldiers and China has "MOST favored nation trading status" I don't even think they have given that to Canada...go figure....

EDIT: i was in Cuba 6 years ago and again recently and they were allowed to freely purchase all the above electronics both times i was there

Do you have non-speculative hard proof of that claim?

dMog, I don't know how much you presume to know about foreign economics, but the North American Free Trade Agreement has been in existence since 1994. To me, a tariff-less trade agreement supersedes any arbitrary 'favored trading status' title between the US and China.

As for weapons, a large number of them came from illegal gunrunning funneling out of former Soviet Bloc countries. The AK-series rifles - particularly the Romanian variants, for instance, are favored worldwide for their ability to perform under nearly any conditions. Other sources for such weapons were from old weapons caches which were actually provided directly by the former USSR and the USA. More recent arms providers to the Middle East have been France and Russia. But even they typically have sold to legitimate governments rather than insurgents.

I'm sure there are gunrunners of all nations profiteering off the conflicts going on, regardless.
