I think that we have a serious problem today : INTERNET CENSORSHIP

US , the champion of fighting for freedom (?!?) are planning to block a site’s web traffic, ad traffic and search traffic using the same website censorship methods used by China, Iran and Syria .

As drafted, the legislation would grant the government and private parties unprecedented power to interfere with the Internet's domain name system (DNS). The government would be able to force ISPs and search engines to redirect or dump users' attempts to reach certain websites' URLs.In response, third parties will woo average users to alternative servers that offer access to the entire Internet (not just the newly censored U.S. version), which will create new computer security vulnerabilities as the reliability and universality of the DNS evaporates.

It gets worse: Under SOPA's provisions, service providers (including hosting services) would be under new pressure to monitor and police their users’ activities. While PROTECT-IP targeted sites “dedicated to infringing activities,” SOPA targets websites that simply don’t do enough to track and police infringement (and it is not at all clear what would be enough). And it creates new powers to shut down folks who provide tools to help users get access to the Internet the rest of the world sees (not just the “U.S. authorized version”).

Why should a non-American user contribute to this ?

Because you can. If it takes effect in America it will affect everyone, with more countries following suit.

I've been signing petitions for ages and posting about it on here, hoping others will do the same.

http://demandprogress.org/blacklist/?source=campaigns If you put your details in here you receive emails from them and only have to click a link to sign the next letter or petition. Very easy to do.

It's been a show of force like no other: More than 700k anti-censorship contacts have been delivered to Congress so far this week, as the Blacklsit Bill gets heard in committee.

They are meeting with people who are on the 'pro censorship' side, whilst not letting anyone talk for the other side (us). Hardly fair.

All the signatures and letters have shown the fact people care about this, whilst Congress and whoever see for the first time that their is opposition. (Many times they thought no one cared what they did) Seriously :showoff:

They took our jooooobbs!

I signed this post earlier from another post and hope mozilla can help draw in more petition numbers. I have been hearing about this act in the works for some time and I think it is going too far. This act is an attempt to control what Americans see, say, and hear over the internet; This is modern-brain washing at its core. Americans leaders have been an advocate to condemn China for their non-democratic ways to limit speech, and yet we are this close to have this bill passed at the federal level. It is a shame.

:protest: :protest: :protest: :chair:

I realize this a concern of Americans living in the US but I think these attempts to control the internet are becoming more and more common in many countries. We all hope that we can do something to petition against these type of government legislation to show that we are not going to just sit by and watch it happen.

Looks like good news, just received this email from Demand Progress :showoff:

Nobody thought it could be done, but it looks like we've turned the tide against the Internet Blacklist Bill. Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi just spoke out against it, and Republican Darrell Issa says it now stands "no chance of passage"!

It's been a show of force like no other: More than 700k anti-censorship contacts have been delivered to Congress so far this week, as the Blacklsit Bill gets heard in committee.

What an amazing couple of days -- let's top it off, and spread the great news!

Please send one more message to Congress -- even if you already have -- touting our numbers and telling them they need to back down. Let's make it clear that the Internet has risen up, and won't back down until Congress heeds our calls.

:D
