Toshiba has finally decided to pull the plug on HD DVD, ending the Hi Def format war. They haven't officially announced it yet, but a Japanese website and an unnamed company source have confirmed it. Toshiba will lose "hundreds of millions of US dollars", but their HD DVD format was going nowhere fast. Two major companies have announced support of Blu-Ray this year, with many others having been behind the winning format earlier. However, the Japanese website, NHK, reports that HD DVD products will still be available for a while. There just won't be any further development. An official announcement from Toshiba is expected next week.

An Update On The Impending Death Of Hd Dvd

HD DVD may as well be as good as gone right now, but it ain’t official till Toshiba says so, according to Ars Technica that will be within days, not weeks.

Chances are, Toshiba is formulating a plan of its shut down process, and HD DVD wasn’t that small of a production process, there is a huge volume of hardware being manufactured. Engadget Japan asked the Toshiba branch over there and got a swift reply in only 9 minutes, the response was: "We are considering our future business policies and plans, and studying the market response [to recent developments]."

After the rumour sparked a few days ago Toshiba’s stock price in Japan soared by 6% in half a day, a sign that investors want Toshiba to back out and scrap HD DVD.

Microsoft was the target of an old recurring rumour today as well; Smarthouse claims that insiders at MS have revealed that the old rumour back 2 years ago about an Xbox 360 Blu-Ray player is true, that a working prototype is being used at the headquarters. It is supposed to be a similar, standalone player as the HD DVD one was, according to Smarthouse an inbuilt Blu-Ray player in a 360 is also being worked on, however this really seems unlikely because of HD downloads in the future.

If the rumour is true, it could be on the market in weeks, just requiring the approvals from the Blu-Ray camp, which I’m sure will be pleased.
