Marik
Spyware Doctor is one of the best antispyware products available to us. It has been given many awards for its detection rate, consistent updates(which are small in size), spyware removal and less false positives. The only problem was it had only paid versions available. But now since partnering with Google there’s a new “Starter Edition” which is given free with Google-packs.The new starter edition, like most “free” software doesn’t have some of the features available in the paid version (but that is to be expected since its given free). The features not available in the free version are:Startup GuardBrowser GuardProcess GuardCookie GuardKeylogger GuardNetwork GuardSite GuardPriority supportPhone supportSo its not bad for a free product…For a more detailed product comparison see screenshot belowHow to installDownloading is where it sucks, you need to use Google packs to download the thing but fortunately Google packs can be removed after installing what you want.To download go to Google Packs web site select Spyware Doctor, download the Google pack installer and download the software from it.(later you can uninstall the updater safely)Download Google PacksI found out the below URL has direct download links to Spyware Doctor(not sure if its the recent version).Spyware Doctor Starter EditionIf you want to keep the downloaded installer for later use follow the instructions given below.1. Download Google-pack after selecting the software you want.2. Run the program and let it download3. Browse to the following location (keep in mind that you have to do this quickly before the downloading software gets installed because the Google updater deletes it once its installed)C:\ProgramData\Google Updater\cache (Vista Only)C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Google Updater\cache (XP Only)4. There should be a file with a .tmp extension. Now once the download is finished and the program is installing this .tmp changes to the setup file(.msi, .exe….), at that moment make sure to copy that file somewhere else. HATE9X
The useless features are not included, sweet.. ;)I'd never use a realtime scanner for the sake of resources.. You don't need one as long as you don't use IE (spyware magnet)..

voodoohippie
Hey this is way kewl that Spyware Doctor is finally FREE and without the resource hogging auto startups. I did buy Spyware Doctor and it did give me a one year subscription. But I didn't like all the extras and took it out. I now Downloaded the FREEWARE version and it found stuff the others didn't. Now I have a fast computer and I don't have to install the bloatware installed on the paid version. I use AVG anyway for a virus scanner and for a firewall (if you fill you need one) there are good alternatives many FREE so cheers for this FREE version of Spyware. Here is the spyware programs I now use:Spyware Doctor FREE version.AVG Antispyware FREENorman Malware remover FREEAVG anti malware FREEAVG anti rootkit FREEAd Aware (sometimes) FREEWith these apps I feel you'll be clean if you update them on a regular bases.
