BEIJING, China (AP) -- A gas explosion in an illegal mine in northern China has killed at least 20 people, state media said Monday.

Xinhua News Agency said the accident happened when miners were attempting to reopen an illegal mine in Shanxi province that the government had used explosives to close in 2004.

It gave no other details of the accident in Linfen city.

An official with the Shanxi provincial work safety bureau confirmed the accident but also gave no other details. She refused to give her name as is common among Chinese officials.

China's coal mines are the world's deadliest, with numerous fires, floods and other disasters every year despite repeated government promises to improve safety. Many of the accidents are in small, illegal mines where safety procedures are often ignored.

Just under 3,800 miners died in China last year, an average of about 10 a day.

legal or illegal, they have all been declared unsafe.

all the "unsafe" practices in the world is exactly where the western world was 100 years ago... until the people demanded that their governments force the industries of the day to make work places and transportation safe. By the way in almost all cases the industries had to be dragged kicking and screaming to comply with even the smallest safety measures. An example was the railroad barons.... they refused to make trains safer, refused to make railroad crossings safer they actually even said publicly that it was far cheaper to pay out when someone sued them then to make their industry safer as a result 50 thousand people a year were getting killed or injured a year. they refused to voluntarily make even the smallest improvements regarding safety until the federal government basically told the barons they would place them in jail and take away the empires , power and money they controlled if they did not improve.... and the coal mines in the western world were even worse.... but thats another story.... :dance2:
