Nvidia's assurances about the integrity of its GPU lineup have been called into question once again. Previously, the company had stated that "no other Nvidia GPUs" were affected by the problem of missing rendering units (ROP), one of the key specs directly affecting gaming performance. However, recent reports from German Heise Online and HardwareLuxx suggest that RTX 50-series laptop GPUs may also be suffering from similar problems.

According to the reports, Nvidia has reached out to laptop manufacturers to ask them to verify the ROP counts in their systems. This development has raised concerns among consumers, who were led to believe that the issue was isolated to a specific subset of Nvidia's desktop GPUs.

In response to these reports, Nvidia's GeForce global PR director, Ben Berraondo, told The Verge that "All partners continue to run checks as part of our standard testing procedure" and that Nvidia will reach out to the German publications to discuss the matter further. Pressed for a more detailed response, Berraondo said: "Nope," as in none of the laptop GPUs are vulnerable to the missing ROP issue.

Adding to the confusion, Heise and HardwareLuxx have stated that the testing will lead to some delay in the release of some of the RTX 50 series laptops. Specifically, they point out that some laptops are likely to ship in April or May, although originally announced release dates in March.

Also, Nvidia officially confirmed that missing ROPs are a "rare issue" that hits GeForce RTX 5090/5090D and 5070 Ti only and just 0.5% of the related GPUs are involved.

We have identified a rare issue affecting less than 0.5% of GeForce RTX 5090 / 5090D, RTX 5080, and 5070 Ti GPUs which have one fewer ROP than specified. The average graphical performance impact is 4%, with no impact on AI and Compute workloads.

I was waiting to get a new laptop. Then RTX 50 is out. But now this issue. Looks like i have to stick to RTX 40 for now. Waiting for xTX 60 is not a good option

They will probably sort this one out, you just have to wait a while longer (as with any new technology to be ironed out).

They will, eventually. I've been repeatedly kicking myself for the last two weeks though because I passed up the chance of an RTX 4080 Super for £800 (new, from Amazon) a few months back. I decided to wait for the new ones to launch. Given the not-so-impressive improvements, scalping, and issues meaning I have to wait even longer, I really wish I had bought the 4080S.

That said, I'm still unsure about the (lack of) VRAM on all but the stupidly unaffordable (to me) 5090 or 4090. My main use case would greatly benefit from more than 16GB; I bet it could even use 32GB quite easily and I know it could use 24. I was even contemplating the 24GB Radeon RTX 7900 XTX, despite the lower performance and potentially higher power consumption (means noisier cooling which I dislike) compared to the 5070Ti or 4080S.

The 8GB GTX 1080 on a 10yo i7 CPU isn't cutting it any more. I'm desperate for an upgrade.

VRAM has been an issue on nvidia hw since the 30x0 series... :-(

What I really like about rtx50x0 series is also that all shading processor are equivalent (can act as FP16, 32...). It's not that apparent in games, but I'd say - when I mentioned above to wait a while - to wait 3 or 4 driver releases.

All should be sorted by then or classactions filed.

I mean with the pending release of "peoples" RTX - 5060 (RTX 4060 is the most prevalent on Steam), it has to work, no room for black-screens etc.
