Google will finally allow you to change your @gmail address or create a new alias, according to a new support document.

As spotted in a Telegram group, Google says that it's already rolling out a feature that lets you change your email address, and it's not just for your custom emails.

Up until now, Google has allowed you to switch between different aliases for your emails, but you couldn't change your “@gmail.com” address.

Google wants to fix this behaviour and give you greater control over your emails.

"The email address associated with your Google Account is the address you use to sign in to Google services. This email address helps you and others identify your account," Google explained.

"If you’d like, you can change your Google Account email address that ends in gmail.com to a new email address that ends in gmail.com."

Google hasn't announced the feature officially yet, but it's fair to assume that it's actually rolling out, given there's a support document.

    Limited rollout

This support document only appears in Hindi (Indian language), so it's possible it's being tested in India before wider rollout.

If you have access to the feature, you'll find it in the Settings, and the Settings page will include a link to the above support.

Gmail alternatives, such as Outlook and Proton, have always allowed users to switch between different aliases, and now it's Google's turn.

If you change your @gmail.com address, the original address will not stop working, and you'll likely have two @gmail.com addresses (aliases).

We don't know when Gmail's address change feature will roll out to everyone.
