September 2025 is here, and Statcounter has the latest data about Windows usage worldwide. According to the new report, Windows 11 is currently the most popular Windows version, running on 49.02% of all Windows PCs. After a big jump in July 2025, the operating system's market share dropped a bit, while Windows 10 reclaimed some of its positions.

As of September 1, 2025, Windows 11 holds 49.02% (-4.49 points) worldwide. Windows 10 is second with 45.65% (+2.77 points), and the rest of the Windows PC market is split by the long-outdated Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows XP. Even after eleven years without support, there are still people out there accessing the internet using Windows XP-based computers.

In its home country, the United States, Windows 11 is much more popular, with a steadily increasing market share of 59.28%. Windows 11 is doing even better in the UK, where 60.53% of Windows PC reportedly run Windows 11. In Europe, however, Windows 10 remains the most popular version in light of its imminent end of support. There, it has a 53.01% market share, while Windows 11 has 43.89%.

It is worth noting that Statcounter's data cannot be 100% correct, and only Microsoft, with its extensive telemetry, can provide precise figures on how many users Windows 11 and Windows 10 have. However, unlike Apple, which regularly publishes detailed reports about its operating system usage, Microsoft refuses to provide official figures. As such, users and developers have to rely on third-party analytic services.

Windows 10 support is ending in one month, so its market share is expected to decline. However, it is the first Windows release to offer consumers the Extended Security Update program entirely for free, giving those who cannot upgrade a 12-month grace period.
