Roughly a week ago, Microsoft released Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11. These updates brought some enhancements on Windows 11 and fixed several issues across both operating systems. However, it seems that Microsoft may have accidentally introduced a new bug in Windows 10.

Several Windows 10 customers have taken to Reddit over the weekend to highlight an issue that breaks the emoji search panel in the operating system. For those unaware, this is the UX that pops up when you use the Win + . keyboard shortcut. The search experience is doesn't bring up search results when you type in a term. Instead, it constantly displays the message "We couldn't find this one." each time you try to search for an emoji.

Based on the reports, it seems like the latest Patch Tuesday update released last week, KB5062554, is triggering the bug. Our own testing as well as reports from Reddit users confirms that the emoji search panel functionality was working completely fine prior to applying Patch Tuesday, but immediately breaks after installation.

It's unclear what caused this problem, but it appears that it is widespread and impacts everyone who uses this functionality. Interestingly, Microsoft hasn't acknowledged the problem just yet, its Windows Release Health dashboard for Windows 10 makes no mention of this.

Unexpected problems like this will likely worry Windows 10 remainers who are resisting Windows 11, and want to stick to their current OS, even if it's in an unsupported state. That said, Microsoft is offering a year of extra updates to Windows 10 customers through both paid and free means, so it might be time to consider that option for now.

For the time being, though, we will just have to wait for Microsoft to acknowledge the issue and provide an ETA for a fix. Sometimes, the company releases out-of-band updates for critical problems rather than waiting for Patch Tuesday, but this probably doesn't classify as one.
