Configuring Netlimiter 3 Remote Administration

Hey!

I want to know how to be able to use Netlimiter 3 Remote Administration feature. I've installed it on several computers, all on homegroup, and when I use the remote administration to connect to the computer name, it fails to connect and says:

"RPC Server is not available"

I've google it up and tried several resolutions available, but it doesn't work. All my RPC & DCOM services are started and set to run automatically. I even changed the following:

Administrative Tools > Local Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > Network Access: Sharing & Security Model for Local Accounts.

But nothing worked. I'd be really glad if anyone could help me on this, I really, really need to know.

Thanks in advance,

Have you checked your router's firewall to see if it has the options for these protocols enabled? Have you checked Net-Limiter Site for solutions? .. and compatibility between OSes.. I would also check and see that it is not related to another part of Home/Office Networking and that those services and/or option are available and running.. Not for sure in what manner NetLimiter uses to connect but it may be in one of the many related services... Have you optimized these systems or disabled any services that you know of?

Mine ( router ) actually has several options for this and its pretty old and basic.. ( but good )... and IF I ever had to connect to anything.. at all I would have to first set the router to enable these protocols and restart it.. Could be a forgotten area..

This is a given that you have checked any other measures of security and firewall as well.. :)

Thanks for your reply. The thing is I've got no idea how to configure my router settings (it were configured by an ISP technician), and I haven't altered any settings because I might mess up the router/connection. I don't know specific things I need to enable or configure. My router is new, bought it about a month ago (TP-Link), I know the login and password to the web-configuration, but the thing is I have no idea what all those stuff are, I never studied networking, so I wouldn't know about them, naturally. It'd be helpful if you could help me out on what specific protocols I need to enable. I have checked the NetLimiter site for solutions, and they provided the following solutions (as listed on their FAQ #15)

If you get this error message when connecting to the remote host, please consider the following:

  • Is NetLimiter running on the remote host?
  • Is there some firewall preventing the access?

I've checked, and NetLimiter was running on all the host computers, running the same operating system (Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1), running on the same Homegroup network. Result: No success.

Secondly, I tried to disable Firewall on my computer and establish a remote connection. Result: No success.

I have optimized my system's services using various maintenance tools (TuneUp, Norton, Ashampoo, Iobit & Systweak) but I'm not sure what all services they disabled, and I don't keep a backup and I have disabled system restore, so there's no way for me restoring them back. I checked NetLimiter's service and it was enabled and working fine, and I also checked the RPC services, and enabled anything that had the word "remote" (except remote registry) and set them to run automatically, but still it didn't work, and gave the same error.

I've checked my router settings, and I haven't come across any setting that speaks of the remote administration, so I'm just clueless. I know that I need to enable those protocols because there's an entry in the Event Viewer that says the NetLimiter failed to connect to the specific computer using any protocols, so I'm thinking it must be it, but I have no idea what protocols and how to enable them. But thank you for taking your time and replying to me.

If you or anyone else can help me enable the protocols, I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Any software firewalls on computers? Check if access is allowed.

Cheers ;)

Thanks for taking your time and replying to my question. Yes I do have Norton installed on all the computers, and I tried disabling them and connecting, but it didn't work. And I have configured NetLimiter unfettered access to the internet, and still it didn't connect.

Secondly, I tried to disable Firewall on my computer and establish a remote connection

What about other computes? Did you try disabling on all computers?

Cheers ;)

Thanks for pointing it out, I'll check it out and post the results.

Okay, I disabled the firewall on my computer, as well as on the other computer and I tried connecting, and that RPC error did not show up, but I have a new problem now. When I put in the computer name and user account name and password, it says that the username and password are incorrect, when infact they are.

What are you using to connect? Windows remote control? Window looks the same. Or is that how Netlimiter connects?

Cheers ;)

I'm using NetLimiter's Remote Admin, and that's how it connects.

Try this http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/turn-on-remote-desktop-in-windows-vista/ It's basic instructions on turning on and allowing this type of connection in Windows.. if these settings are turned off it may be denying the type of connection no matter what.. Many times if you optimize a system or change settings this is one of the first to go..

OR it could be the router.. :P and its fairly simple once you get to the insides of your router config pages.. :) best to study them first..

Hm, maybe it relies on Windows remote. If it is, then you must add password to every Windows you want to connect remotely. You can configure those Windows to auto log on with password if password is the issue. Also, are all computes connected to router or you are using switch in your network?

Cheers ;)

I tried it, but didn't work :(

I tired to connect to the computers with and without passwords, but either ways it doesn't work and gives the same error. How do I configure the other computers to auto log on with password, I don't know how to do it :( Yes all the computers are connected to the router using Wireless. I don't know what you mean by using switch in network, but all the computers are connected through wireless.

I think he may mean how and where to add the password to Windows.. I am sort of curious .. Unless its in LSP... I always used RealVNC or UltraVNC.. Nothing on the RDP Prompt and says you will be asked on connection but no place to set it for this machine..

I mean, add password to Windows, not Nelimiter password.

Cheers ;)

I did add password to Windows, Netlimiter has no password. It still didn't work :(

I didn't understand a think you said, except for the first sentence :P When I go to the remote administration of Netlimiter, it asks me to write in the computer name or IP (if static) and write the user account name of the computer. After I click connect, it says write in the password (if there isn't one). If I click continue, it says incorrect password (even if I wrote in the correct password after adding password to the user account).

Well see I have tried somethings similar to this in the past as well... same result.. Therefore it would natural to assume that a password must be entered somewhere else for an RDP or type connection in the LSP or GP.. or something... The other programs I used where rather straight forward and it doesn't matter which account.. as long as the Service is running...

OR something like this.. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/remote-desktop-connection

To allow remote connections on the computer you want to connect to

Open System by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.

Click Remote settings. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Picture of the Remote tab in the System Properties dialog box The Remote tab in the System Properties dialog box

Under Remote Desktop, select one of the three options.

Click Select Users.

If you're an administrator on the computer, your current user account will automatically be added to the list of remote users and you can skip the next two steps.

In the Remote Desktop Users dialog box, click Add.

In the Select Users or Groups dialog box, do the following:

To specify the search location, click Locations, and then select the location you want to search.

In Enter the object names to select, type the name of the user that you want to add, and then click OK.

The name will be displayed in the list of users in the Remote Desktop Users dialog box. Click OK, and then click OK again.

EDIT: Updated with Windows 7 Instruction instead of Vista.. oops!

Thank you so much for all your information and help. I currently managed to hide Netlimiter from user's view, so I don't think I'll be needing remote administration for a while. But thank you all for taking your time and responding to my topic.
