mray88
Well, I've been holding on to my FF 3.6, not wanting to give up extensions that weren't going to work on these later versions. Seeing the version numbers rise so rapidly though, made me decide to finally take the plunge today. I have to say, I'm really perplexed. I see very little, if any, performance improvement, and the same memory hog it always was. I'm literally scratching my head over what these new versions could possibly be about, other than security fixes that were made available to 3.6XX versions anyway, and the inconvenience of giving up extensions to which I was accustomed. I'm left with the impression that as much as I don't want to be giving one more drop of info about me and my whereabouts to Google, that these guys are really losing the race. I've always been a big fan of FF, and believe me, that conclusion is really disappointing. I just don't get it.

I switched back to v4 from v5 and I'm not regretting the switch. now firefox keeps reminding me at least twice a day to upgrade to v6.x but I just give it the finger. until and unless they can come up with stability, performance and memory improvements, it's gonna keep getting that middle finger from me... johndoe
Done, Thanks! But dunno man, I think my life's gonna be sorta empty if I don't get to give ff the bird at least once a day :lol:I've been using it since before v1 when it was in the pre-release stages but how it just sucks the life out of my system now, not to mention the memory issues, has become deplorable... HX1
Well I have the installers for 3 to 9a1 now.. using 4,7 and 9 now.. I think I started using it at the later version 1 or something. I do know I was using 2.. when 3 came around it took awhile before I changed over because of extensions.. and I wasn't sure about it.. by that time it had updated several times.. 3 seemed to have its good and bad points.. I stopped at 4 because 5 wasn't anything better and seemed to load some things slower and 6 was worse... I hit the Nightly using 8 then 9.. and 9 seemed to really show some improvements.. but I am still wanting the same extensions I have but better written to match it.. I say that because without anything its instantaneous on load and start up.. add extensions and you start to get all the jacked-in code and things start to take longer and run slower.. but it still screams of subtle improvement.. I have the same extensions enabled from 4-9 and have archived my 3 just in case... Would be nice to see some of the extensions and how they are written improved.. there seem to be many issues.. a problem here or there x 35 extensions and it impacts the browser.. The thing is that they shoudl not be written that way.. I think something for the devs of the extensions should be created to help or enable them to be able to .. catch-up or meet certain standards even get help with improving them.. so far its moving and code is changing to fast to efficiently address the issue.. or find a platform to stand on to work.. so-to-speak.. t will still take time and probably be in the future somewhere but I think in the end this may all be in the best interest.. as well as all of the feedback as this thing improves.. I still do remember and love the days of running the same one for 6-12 months out of the year.. :P

mray88
Well, I wound up lasting on FF 6 for less than a day. Switched back to 3.6. As far as I can tell, the effort to upgrade was utterly worthless. The only thing I seem to have accomplished is breaking some extensions that did not care much for me going back and forth between versions. Actually one oddball plus was that since the "theme" I've been using for years didn't work on 6, it forced me to try something else, which I actually kinda like better, so I suppose there was some glimmer of light :dance2: in the general waste of time. One of the curious downsides of the process was that (remarkably) FF 6 appeared to slow my browsing to a crawl.... so much for improvements. If you ask me Mozilla has fallen into a path of dung and darkness. How in the world can you move up three versions on software, and be left in a position where I couldn't explain to anyone what changed or what actually seemed improved? Time to take other browsers more seriously, with an eye at unchecking that "default browser" button. Sad, but true.
Administrator DKT27 Posted September 7, 2011 Administrator Share Posted September 7, 2011 @mray88: Have you looked at the benchmarks? Forget benchmarks, the difference between FF 3.6 and FF6 is like between earth and clouds. Its just that there's something horribly wrong in Firefox 6. 5 was fine, something's not right in 6. I'm waiting for Firefox 7 to release (26 September) for the benchmarks. :)
mray88
@DKT27 -- never tried FF5, just went from 3.6 to 6, so I can't really comment on that part of your impressions. As for "benchmarks", with all due respect to you, I don't give a flying you-know-what about 'em! What I care about is how it feels and works when I'm using the browser, and if things are going smoothly. In my unscientific test, it went like crap, and walked away thinking Mozilla is wasting my time and causing me disruption and aggravation. I've been using FF for years, pretty much since the beginning, but my current take on it is that they've lost their way. It seems to me that the extensions are key to the problem. From one version of Chrome to the next, my extensions seem to work flawlessly. With FF, they've taken their strongest point, and muddied it with confusion and incompatibility. That's why people are giving up on them. It's really that simple.
Administrator DKT27 Posted September 7, 2011 Administrator Share Posted September 7, 2011 I agree, what matters is how it feels, and I'm openly saying that Firefox 6 sucks performance-wise without any benchmarks or scores. A simple user wont mind using Firefox 3.6, but if you dig deeper, you'll see a totally changed thing feature wise. It's not that only release cycle has changed. As for the addons, I've mentioned it a thousand times and will mention once again. Jetpack and Firefox 9. Jetpack, once released as final, will make the addons same way as Google does. And Firefox 9 because they are implementing this feature with lot of testing the thinking that will make most of your incompatible addons work.Having said, if you are using Firefox 3.6 you are missing newer addons and older addon alternatives that, at times, are way better the older ones.
