Firefox Portable

Hey,

For some reason whenever I try using Firefox Portable (wherever), it's extremely slow to load and if I opennew tabs and whatnot it Stops Responding for a while.

Google Chrome Portable doesn't have this issue.

I've uninstalled all extensions that I don't use and don't have any themes, so curious as to what may be causing it.

{Happens if I use on Desktop / laptops}

Which version?.. There are some changes that can be made.. but depending on which version you are using.. including who the portable was created by.. there may be somethings that can be changed.. I actually had to switch my portable version around from what was stated as the best settings and got better performance.. The real consideration is however that the speed of react of getting files and data throughput is also limit by the speed of data transfer on USB2.0..

Okay well I just realized my portable is not up to date.. BUT.. I will do some maintenance and see what I find.. if its the same settings that are adjusted to make it portable it should be a matter of changing them back to defaults... since cache and few others elements are turned off for both security or privacy.. Thing is with me I will never be accessing anything even on the same site as any of my data or inputting any of it so it really doesn't matter.. LOL.. Anyway mine always ran slower this way.. so I switched it back and gained performance.. except startup... in which I have always had to approve a firewall window and wait.. sometimes a little faster the second time.. sometimes.. WBB..

Yes a double-post.. hate it.. BUT in the effort of bringing my 4.0.1 installation around I have noticed that mine was taking CENTURIES to load, restart.. everything.. which is odd because I remember it being just fine...

NOW.. I have done several things to give you the background.. it was a fresh 3.5 install that was given the usual addons and extensions... Some of this was pretty basic stuff. BUT it was a LONG time ago... rarely ever used.. updated regularly until the last few months..

  • I cleaned out my prefs.js file.. of extensions and settings pertaining to extensions I have uninstalled in the effort of upgrading and moving forward.. This included skins.

  • Before I restarted it.. I also went in to the extensions folder and removed old extensions if they were still there.. Takes going into the folders and reading what in the chrome folder.

  • I then went in to the plugins folder and removed out dated plugins.. and replaced them with new files...

  • I started the browser and already noticed a big improvement in starting. I then disabled 7 plugins which are installed in this system which I disable on normal installations.

  • I then closed the browser and cruisied the same profile folder.. This time I noticed that my places.sqlite file was over 20 MB in size as well as my urlclassifier.sqlite file... after a restart.. my places was 10 MB and url classifier was about 5MB... and the browser was running alot faster..

My progress thus far has brought it back to what I remember it to be.. but I am not done.. One more thing I did was update my extensions.. and I also uninstalled a few and installed some new ones before I got started.. ( This really sparked my interest because it took a few minutes .. Like 4 to restart and the USB was working its butt off.. :)

Will update on where I get with it.. Basic though for regular Firefox... and I have not yet dug into the cache settings or anything yet.. nor updated to 6.0.1.. Which I had rather skip anyway and get to 7.. or 9..

Nothing for me, still slow. So I ended up giving up on it and just using Chrome portable.

But I'm glad that in bringing this up got you updated on your version =P

Well actually I should have kept it at 4.. like I had it.. I have been playing around with it some more and it seems my sizes where short sighted to what they actually were.. very odd to have databases this large for no purpose.. I mean 20 MB for something that is empty is odd..

ANYWAY.. I hate version 6.. it is crap... even on regular install.. and now I am stuck with it for portable... I have been using 4 for a long time because five was 'so-so'.. and 6 was seemingly a major 'mistep' for Mozilla.. it has problems.. and I cannot seem to get the issue worked out either.. The slow down seems to have come with version 6 and its the program itself.. no other reason as far as I can tell from my end... I even turned of Blocking for website forgery and phishing or attack sites.. does nothing to improve it.. and that is with running few extensions.. and all compatible... checked settings .. all of it...

They need to roll out 7 soon.. if possible.. without it being an unfinished product..

IF anyone out there happens to have the 4.0 Portable installer from PortableApps.com, please let me know.. in the meantime I am going to try to patch this back together from my normal 4.0.1 installation.. or Nightly.. one of the two.. :P Making this post from the trainwreck as we speak.. 'Poor dead fluffies...' I could only hope right now.. LOL

EDIT: Okay I got it.. its not as fast as the HD install but its a major improvement over version 6 .. AND I might add it still takes 10 secs to start after allowing it through the firewall on USB 2.0... I have three other apps to update and then I will defrag it.. and check again to be sure.. Still looking for a few portable versions right now.. :sneaky:

I know what I want.. starting to sound like something else.. LOL...all da fun in testing.. :D ...But yeah I just copied the program files folder over to the other one after I deleted the 6.0.1 portable install in that folder.. rather quickly.. I was back on track... Thanks for the link though.. I found it awhile back too by accident... There is a another site called FileHippo.. that has past versions too..
