Sonar
I'd say if it's not broken don't try to fix it ;)its not broken - brand new. was told about DD-WRT to improve wireless signal.
mara-
Well, I would be on shought side, but I heard a lot of new features can be gained by DD-WRT. You can increase signal, but be careful, device will heat more. You may need a cooler. :DCheers ;)
OhMyGod
I'm currently using DD-WRT on my Netgear Duo Wireless N Router, it has improved my wireless signal and added many security options not available with Netgear firmware. My router is 3 years old and Netgear hasn't release one single update since I bought it.Of coarse before you decide to upgrade to DD-WRT, make sure that you have the latest backup firmware available from your vendor.Read all information in detail or you could corrupt your router to the point that it is useless and you will just have to buy a new router. Make sure that you understand how to restore your backup firmware. If all of this sounds to difficult, I recommend having someone that has some advanced technical skills to help you.I have installed DD-WRT on four routers, three worked perfectly but the other older router was rendered useless after the installation. The one that was rendered useless wasn't a big loss for me since it wouldn't work properly any ways.Good Luck.
bwop
I cut a hole through the case of my Buffalo router and attached a big heat sink through the hole to the highest heat producing component of the router. No problems with DD-WRT!I've had this now for 4-5 years, which is nearly miraculous for a wireless router (though maybe not, since it's not a Linksys, Belkin or Netgear piece of shit). johndoe
if you can afford it, i'd suggest buy a used dd-wrt compatible router off of ebay or something, experiment with dd-wrt on that and if you feel comfortable after that, hit the new router with dd-wrt
LeetPirate
Don't be scared about this, Buffalo has seen the error in their ways and have returned to providing stock dd-wrt firmware as they did in the past. When I recommended you to buy that router I already took this into consideration. Just get the latest firmware from the Buffalo site and use it. Use this link.http://www.buffalotech.com/support/getfile/whrhpg300n-pro-v24sp2-17135-eu-us.zipThis is the latest Buffalo firmware (2011-06-06) that is dd-wrt powered. No need to worry about anything, this dd-wrt firmware is customized to work with the WHR-HP-G300N and is a special build for the unit and all its specific features. You can also use the latest dd-wrt build from dd-wrt.com but the one from the Buffalo website is the one I recommend. LeetPirate
Before flashing assigning a static ip to your lan connection. Then go in your network adapter settings and ensure that this thing called "shutdown wake on lan" is enabled. Computer IP: 192.168.11.2Mask: 255.255.255.0Gateway: 192.168.11.1It may also have something to do with the region your router version is from. I don't have one here to check for any regional indicators but perhaps you can see if it is Asia Pacific or EU or US versions. I think the AP region version has a different cpu in it.Try this. First flash over v1.82 of the "user friendly" non-ddwrt firmware from the buffalo support site. Give it a minute or so to completely reboot.Try one of the earlier versions of the Buffalo dd-wrt firmware and see if those work. Check the buffalo downloads support site and select the correct region, I assume it would be EU, then they should give you the html file with the link to ftp server. If you still get the same error let me know, I can point you to the most recent dd-wrt build for your router. I believe the only difference between the Buffalo dd-wrt firmware and the regular dd-wrt firmware is the branding/theme and the Buffalo firmware supports the AOSS feature which is pretty useless for most people since it just makes more sense to configure your wifi settings manually. LeetPirate
I'm not sure how to tell the region either, I assume once the manual comes in English it is the EU/US edition but the only other thing I can think of is if they add letters in the model number like AP (Asia Pacific) or JP (Japan) to represent the region. Then most likely the US/EU version will still have no letters appended so the model number will be plain whr-hp-g300n on the sticker.Oh there is one other way to check the region of the router, check the first 2 digits on the barcode from the left side. US is anything between 00 to 13 and UK is 50. The first number is by itself outside the actual barcode on the bottom left of it but the second number is directly under the barcode together with some other numbers but it's just the first and second numbers you are looking at. You can post a pic of the barcode if you are unsure. There is an earlier version 14998 that you can try but anyway here is the dd-wrt build 17201 for the Buffalo WHR-HP-G300N. Install it through the normal web interface and when it says it's done leave it for about 1 or 2 min before doing anything because sometimes even though the firmware says it is finished it only means it is finished uploading and that it still has to erase the nvram and store the new firmware. It will reboot on its own (possibly more than once) when it is done, so just click the button to install it and wait a few minutes. One thing, when you extract this firmware from the archive, the file extension is .bin and not .enc like the Buffalo dd-wrt firmware files.http://www.multiupload.com/JOLVJLHYPLWhen it is finished, the new default IP range will probably chance to 192.168.1.x so afterwards you can switch back your network connection to Automatic DHCP mode, then unplug and replug the network cable to the router to refresh the lease. Sonar
I did try to rename the filename. The file name on the disc provided is Professional15501AP.ENCso i did try to rename the latest firmware file to Professional17135AP.ENCbut still wouldn't have it.EditThe number at the beginning of the bar code is 4.Edit2Thank you Leet - The .BIN did change from .11.1 to 1.1 - but that isn't a problem i got in.my first router that ive updated and its still working I'm proud of my self lolEdit3The dashboard of this router is showing 1 hour to fast. the time settings are correct. Any ideas?Current Time: Fri, 02 Sep 2011 15:48:02 its actually 14:48 hmmm

LeetPirate
You don't really need to set the time but if you want it there you have to go to the basic setup page (click basic, then basic setup or it may already be on basic setup when you click basic on the higher level menu) and scroll down to the bottom. You will see time settings. First you need to enable the NTP client, then enter your timezone, then enter your daylight savings time settings, then enter a NTP server name. The most common NTP server is time.nist.gov but you can search for more of them. Once you enter the settings click apply and the time will correct itself. ck_kent
@Sonar, how's your Wi-fi N connection with this model? Is it stable or do you get drop-outs from time to time? I asked this because the WZR-HP-G300NH model seems to have a drop-out problem with its wi-fi connection based on multiple comments from owners. I guess its the driver DD-WRT is using against the Atheros chipset of the router. I would also like to purchase this for a friend because of DD-WRT. It just gives you more control over your router and it also supports IPTables as well.

Its running smoothly for what I want it to do. - I haven't had any problems at all with wireless G or N since buying and using the latest dd-wrt firmware.xbox plays fine on games like Halo 3, GTA, Call of duty (old and new). - No lag no slow downs ... plays fine. But the one thing I like about Buffalo is it's preloaded with DD-WRT. The problem is, retailers here will void the warranty of the router once they found out that the stock firmware was changed. Although it's easy to flash the firmware to DD-WRT, I don't wanna mess with it yet during its warranty period, hence I prefer Buffalo.
