A woman was tricked by some con men into buying what she thought was an iPad in a McDonald's parking lot in Spartanburg, SC. It turned out she paid for a block of wood with Apple's logo.

Apple's iPad is certainly a popular device and as such it's also a big target for thieves. As it turns out, it can also be used by con men to make some quick bucks from some unsuspecting marks. This week it was reported that a Spartanburg, South Carolina woman was offered a chance to purchase an iPad, only to find out she bought a block of wood with Apple's logo.

The Spartanburg Herald-Journal web site reports that the woman was at a local McDonalds parking lot on Monday night when she was approached by two men who claimed to have purchased a large amount of iPads at a bulk price. They offered to sell her one for $300. The woman said she only had $180 on her, but the men said they would sell her the iPad for that amount. She received a FedEx box from the two men, one of several kept in the car. However, the woman found out the truth only when she got back home later that night and opened the FedEx box to discover the worthless block of wood. The two con men are still at large.

While it's becoming a more common practice to have these kind of scams happen via online transactions, this case proves that old fashioned face-to-face con men can still victimize people when given a chance. Law enforcement officials say that if a person is approached by men with a similar offer they should always ask to open the box and examine the product before paying any money.

you see she say the dievice through the see through plastic on the package. these jackazzes even placed color icons of the apps on it. that should been the number one NOGO. a new items that has not been open is not giong to have the battery installed and powered on. plus inside the mail package should been the offical box with the device inside that. this woman was a fool. i like to see a photo of her and what her car looks like. just curious. mcdonalds have cameras too. also if you are going to buy something from strangers in a parking lot use your phone and take a photo of them and their vehilce if they got one.

Women tricked into paying for fake paper laptop      :frusty:

You would think that news of a woman in Spartanburg, South Carolina being tricked into buying a block of wood that she thought was a iPad would get some attention. But two more women from the same exact city didn't get the memo. The Spartanburg Herald-Journal web site reports that these unidentified women bought what they thought was a laptop from a man in a gas station parking lot on Wednesday. It turned out later to be just some computer paper wrapped up in duct tape.

The police report said that the two women were approached in that parking lot by a man who said he had laptops for sale in his car. He claimed he got them in bulk for a discount. The two woman and the man moved over to another parking lot where another man joined the first. One of the women got $250 from a nearby ATM to pay for the "laptop", which was supposed to be inside a FedEx box. It was only later when the women got home and opened the box that they discovered the computer paper, along with a power cord, inside.

This story is almost a perfect mirror for what happened on Monday in Spartanburg, when a woman was also tricked by men who sold her what they said was an iPad in a McDonald's parking lot. In fact, as she found out later, what she really bought was a block of wood with Apple's logo. Law enforcement officials don't know if this new incident involves the same con men or if it is a copycat. In any case, we will repeat our common sense advice that we gave out earlier this week; if you are approached by men with a similar offer you should always ask to open the box and examine the product before paying any money.

Most probably a bait and switch. The conman appears to reach in and grab a random box that looks exactly like all the others in the trunk but it's the ONLY one with a real iPad. After showing it, they give her a 'fresh' unopened box of wood for her money.

I simply cannot feel sorry for someone who purchases big ticket items from some random guys in a parking lot. She may as well have been wearing a sign that said "Rip me off; I have it coming."
