nsane.forums
A $35 laptopA student PC for just $35? Apparently so. We first heard about the ultra-low-cost laptop a year ago, when India's Ministry of Human Resource Development unveiled the device as an educational tool for students. Critics scoffed at the bargain computer, questioning whether a usable device could be manufactured at such a low cost. Plus, photos of the prototype revealed a homely tablet PC with seemingly limited capabilities. Could students put such a device to good use? Fast-forward a year and the $35 computer project is still on. In fact, Kapil Sibal, India's minister for human resource development, tells The New York Times that the bargain device will arrive within a few weeks. "All the naysayers will be unpleasantly surprised," Sibal told The Times. Indian officials have yet to announce the names of the laptop's manufacturer(s), or say when production will begin. Basic features should include a touchscreen, Wi-Fi, a keyboard, 2GB of RAM, a USB port, and a 2-watt power system for regions with shaky electrical grids, according to a July 2010 report in The Economic Times. More than one million of the devices will be produced and sold to colleges and universities in India, which faces a shortage of teachers. Indian officials see the laptop as an even more affordable alternative to a $75 low-cost computer planned by nonprofit organization One Laptop Per Child (OLPC). OLPC is designing a sub-$100, solar-powered tablet for emerging markets. It hopes to ship the device next year or sooner. Administrator DKT27 Posted August 5, 2011 Administrator Share Posted August 5, 2011 @myidisbb: It's government funded, and lots of organizations have donated on it, with co-ordination of One Laptop Per Child. Even the labs required to make this are donated freely. Have you heard about Tata Nano? World's cheapest car that's prooved what it premised. Don't worry, the guy in the pic is quite trustable and you will see a perfectly good tablet made by them. This ain't a scam. I may sound a bit harsh, but we ain't talking about the Obama govt. or similar here. I can give you my guarantee that this will release, will be successful and won't be crap.Sorry for saying this, but this is such a nice thing and is being made into suspicious subject. vin3e
Should I also assume myidisbb owns nothing material because there are no companies he trusts? lol.I'm not taking a shot at you but yes, don't believe everything people say because thats a given anyway but if it's for a good cause surely you should hail it opposed to something else like a crappy Xbox.I understand your views but embrace culture enrichment rather than vilify corporations simply because they are corporations. T0nyB
Sure it's going to be a blast, but devices so cheap, how long will they last, a year, before they break down? Low cost materials usually break much easier, don't they? And what then, I bet there will be little conserning quarantees...
vin3e
You cant just dismiss something because its tacky. I, for one am happy with this progress. Sure someone out there is benefiting from this release but that goes for everything with a price tag anyway. Its a step in the right direction although I am quite skeptical of how a laptop can help a child rather than just having one for the sake of everyone else having one.
