Chrome. I want to secure it

Confusing title :P So Firefox has been annoying me lately by crashing often so I've been looking for alternatives. Wasn't keen on Opera as I found it a little confusing :s So thought I'd give Chromium a go. Roboform wouldn't work with it so I've installed Chrome :o I know im usually Anti-Google but wondered if I could make it less Googlie :D

Basically looking for extensions, add ons etc to make it a nice secure browser whilst giving out as little info about me as possible, if it's possible.

Adding a few extensions showed that they need access to all my data and habits :fear: Don't like the sound of that. So can you recommend anything? Your favourite apps for chrome? Not just security but any useful or cool extensions. (I've searched the forum but couldn't find a list of favs like the one for FF, apologies if I missed it)

A quick look and I've installed Adblock plus,Better popup blocker, Dr Web Anti virus link checker,Ghostery and SafeLinks Free. Not too sure about all these yet.

What do you Chrome users think? Any help for a new Chrome user would be good B)

Oh and I'll fix FF when I feel like it :D Could do with a change.

Thanks

edit Should have said it's the up to date regular flavour 12.0.742.122

Hi,if you're concerned about your privacy with Chrome and Google, then here's your solution:

SRWare Iron

SRWare Iron: The browser of the future - based on the free Sourcecode "Chromium" - without any problems at privacy and security

Google's Web browser Chrome thrilled with an extremely fast site rendering, a sleek design and innovative features. But it also gets critic from data protection specialists , for reasons such as creating a unique user ID or the submission of entries to Google to generate suggestions. SRWare Iron is a real alternative. The browser is based on the Chromium-source and offers the same features as Chrome - but without the critical points that the privacy concern.

We could therefore create a browser with which you can now use the innovative features without worrying about your privacy.

Yes but does Roboform work with it? Thats the only thing I must have.

If it works with Chrome,it works with SR Iron too.

..and really in my opinion and especially if your wanting to ever write code of any kind it is better to use Webkit, Trident, and Gecko engines.. each one has its different aspects and to truly be compatible and coding correctly it should be viewable and usable in all of them.. by W3C standards.. which I know some hang out to dry...BUT.. one such option would be to try out the Lunascape 6. OR have FF,Opera - Internet Explorer - Safari, Chrome..or possible spin offs of them ( which I do not recommend doing as there truly are a few differences in engines between builds in many cases - and staying with the base engine browser is usually best ).. SO I have Opera, Iron, IE9, and FF... which I use... Lunascape is also cross-extension compatible.. and I have not yet had the time to check it out but it has been setting there staring at me.. :P in Iron I have a theme installed, AdBlock Plus for Google Chrome, Albine Chrome Block ( experimental for me ), Turn Off The Lights, and I have yet to find something as smart as the TorButton.. which covers most areas.. I have tried Flash Block extensions ad several others in the past but the AdBlock Plus really seems to do well.. There is also an adblock.ini you can add n to Iron.. BUT it causes some problems with regular code expressions so I would be aware of it if you find and use it... I think I killed Gears as well.. not for sure.. lots of settings to pay attention to..

I never run without filtering.. PeerBlock.. and ESET/ Tenable Nessus.. blah blah...everyone has heard it a thousand times..

Opera takes a bit to setup... but once you do .. your there.. Same extensions for it as far s AdBlock Plus is concerned and a couple of others.. In Iron I also make sure to set the browser up to do what I need it to especially clearing everything on exit as well... You can use Tor with all of them however it takes configuring a Proxy for your entire system as well.. and still if you do not have proper protection at the system level you can still leak information regardless of your settings in your browser.. so on one note...you should be aware of that.. Second is having your Java Security settings done in correctly.. You cover the bases you will only really have just a few issues that must be addressed at the Application level..

Anyway.. really in my opinion it has been quite awhile that extensions and plugins have actually been created or geared towards privacy and system security .. as most of what you see are games and Bookmarks.. little things that are fun and bubbly but major crap.. AFAIK.. and some will even expose you to a threat.. So you have t be aware what you doing anymore.. Devs are geared at connecting and making sense of the tons of information and data that is relative to a user today online.. Social Networks, Shopping, Chatting, Sharing.. all of those elements as well as likes and dislikes... much of this exposes 95% of personal information and will allow most to fill in the blanks and even categorize them.. Some would argue that it is making for a better Internet and better convenience.. Better services and marketing that ill help and economy.. yet the truth of the whole matter is in fact that we had rather have the same privacy as being at home shopping from a catalog and not have some freak walk up and start talking about our friends and our likes and dislikes which lures us into a state of trust.. to only get screwed again..OR to jump at an ad without investigating the product or service thoroughly and weighing its reputable value to us... Anyone can buy a suit.. not everyone can make it look good.. :) Is it wearing you or are you wearing it.. :) sort of thing... Some want it some don't.. but I think that it should be left to specific services.. not coded into the DNA of applications, devices and OSes nor taught to users, to have to get ADHD, or obsessive compulsive disorder, nor empower some of the issues in which these things completely have to leech off of to survive.. They are nice options... not pre-requisites... ANYTHING that forces you to do such.. should be an obsolete idea..

Hmm it's been a long time since I used Lunascape, might try it again. When looking for Chrome extensions I couldn't even find a security/privacy section  Adblock was in the Fun category lol. So much crap about social networking etc, I don't need any of that. RSS from Nsanedown is about as social as I get :D

Thanks for the suggestions

I've used most browsers at some point, even if it's only for a day, but nowdays I need to have Roboform running as I can't be bothered to change to another password manager. It should work in Luna but a quick search revealed

If you have RoboForm 7.2.6 or higher installed in your computer, you may see Luna.exe process remains running after you close Lunascape. There is no workaround to it unless you uninstall RoboForm. However, we're looking into it to fix in one of our future releases.

Maybe it's fixed by now.

HX1 don't try and confuse me with your Nessus talk :D I think Lunascape will keep me busy for a long time -_-

I would recommend only Adblock Plus for Google Chrome™ (Beta). Why?

Mostly because Google Chrome doesn't need anything else to be secure, due to it "sandbox" schema.

I don't know how Roboform works, but I'm more than satisfied with Keepass.

An extra, It could be used, is to change How Flash and Java works in Chrome, switching to "Click to Play".

PS: Sorry about my English. I do my best. And yes, use Stable releases not beta nor alphas.

Great info HX1.
