Enable the WebGuard on Avira Personal WITHOUT installing the SearchFree (Ask.com) toolbar

I have seen that the Avira AntiVir Personal (free antivirus from Avira) is widely used - but has a problem - it doesn`t have web-filter .

That situation changed with the last ( Avira AntiVir 10 Service Pack 2 (SP2) ) version (or latest program auto-update) .

If you look at `About` you will see vers.10.2.0.659 wich introduced the long awaited web filter - but BAD SURPRISE from Avira : they want you to install a (USELESS) toolbar (SearchFree toolbar from Ask.com) .

Here I will explain you the few very simple steps to install Web Guard without having to install the toolbar :

- Create a registry string value with the name value as tb and the value data as AVR-W1 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AskToolbar\Macro.

If you don’t see AskToolbar and Macro, you will need to create it by right clicking and select New > Key.

- Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features. Use your mouse to select Avira AntiVir Personal – Free Antivirus from the list and click on the Change button.

- Make sure that Modify is selected and click the Next button. You should now immediately see the “Install Components” window.

- IF you are seeing the window that asks you to install the WebGuard with Avira SearchFree Toolbar like the screenshot below, that means you did something wrong at the first step.

Click Next > Finish > go through the Configuration Wizard and followed by a restart. You will see that the WebGuard is active on your Avira AntiVir Personal – Free Antivirus WITHOUT the unnecessary SearchFree/Ask Toolbar.

Below is a screenshot of the article and credits should go to it`s author :

EDIT (07.30.2011 , 12:20) :

I think all above is clear enough - still , if you want more details go to original article .

Wow... I have to try that when I come back home. If it works, that'd be awesome!!

Thanks for the guide.

Is there a way to test, if its really active somehow? My first thought was that Avira just *reports* it working but the protection is inactive in the background.

Sure it works - I tried myself also before posting here <_<

Didn't work for me. I added the registry entries and followed the instructions but it still asks me to install the toolbar. I've tried several times over and it always asks.

Either it doesn't work for everyone, is OS x86/x64 independant, or the instructions are not clear enough. I doubt it's the latter, but if someone wants to write up a more complete step-by-step guide (starting from the first installation of Avira, all the way to the end) I'd give it another go.

Only to skip from be "reminded" at every boot, save the following as No_Reminder.reg, then add it to registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\Reminder]

"MsgID1055_LastShown"="02cc35c47308c61e"

"MsgID1055"=dword:00000003

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\Reminder]

"MsgID1055_LastShown"="02cc35c47308c61e"

"MsgID1055"=dword:00000003

This is tested and 100% working for me.

Not tested yet the suggested (see reg from http://www.raymond.cc/images/disable-avira-toolbar.zip )

containing registry keys needed to install Web Guard without having to install the toolbar.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AskToolbar]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AskToolbar\Macro]

"tb"="AVR-W1"

I will test myself tomorrow.

EDIT: tested now and WebGuard can be installed by going to AddRemove Programs,

then Change, Modify , check on WebGuard and follow all steps.

Also to test if the WebGuard is working open firefox on this site

where allways trigger WebGuard when click on the Download Now image.

It seems that the reason the method isn't working for some people because I believe it was a fix for x86 OS's.

I did some registry searching on my own and this is what works for me on Windows 7 Ultimate x64:

Add the following registry key(s):

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\AskToolbar]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\AskToolbar\Macro]

"tb"="AVR-W1"

Or simply merge the pre-made registry file I made:

Enjoy :)
