myidisbb
right now im using thermaltake blacx duet docking stations. i like something that i can put more internal harddrives in and be easier to carry instead of these 3 docking stations. looking for something that will hard 4 plus hds so least cables and power connections required. any thoughtslooking at a drobo or drobo s for taking it with me instead so it take up less room etc. would though like something with both lan and usb so i can take it and add it to my network laterediting this again. looks like someone took the my refreshed reply and added it to the originally. shame on you joking.anyway, what i want is do be able to take my 2 TB HD volume that is in a docking station and place it in a storage devise. not sure if i need a NAS or SAN. i dont really care about RAID. i prefer to have each HD in the devise with seperate volume so i can take it out and edit it or replace it with a copy.im just not very finally with the correct terms and abilities on these hardwares. dont want to waste money learning the hard way.saw a Thecus N7700PRO 7-Bay Network Attached Storage that was nice but like i said i like to be able to do the above. its almostt temping to just get an large desktop case and have the computer on the network set to share everything and have lots of harddrives inside it. but that would mean not being able to take it with me when i go traveling. i know it would be far chepaer to make a NAS oneself i just dont know what is required etc. am i lookign more for a JBOD devise? The Pope
http://www.startech.com/HDD/Enclosures/35in-4-Drive-eSATA-RAID-External-Hard-Drive-Enclosure-with-Controller~SAT3540ER2I have 2 of these with 8 2TB HDDs connected to a windows 7 peer server, they work great.I stream movies from them to a media center pc via a esata port, speed is pretty close to a internal drive as long as you use the esata.USB was kind of slow when testing.NAS devices are ok but having a dedicated PC for file storage and acting as a peer server is great, add ons are unlimited.A mini itx case, board with a Intel ion cpu and windows 7 pro are pretty unbeatable.I use mine as.... 1 file storage2 seed box3 movie server4 music server5 pron box = ) "so the wife doesn't see it"Just giving some ideas why I didn't go with a NAS or SAN. Hope it helps a little.
