Vista to XP Pro

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone out there could give me some tips for installing a new OS on my Laptop.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A100. It was pre installed with Window Vista Home Premium.

Now I want to install Windows XP pro and completely remove the Vista OS from my Laptop.

Is that possible? What factors will I need to consider? Will it be compatible with XP if it was pre installed with Vista?

Thanks guys.

Update:

Ive never actually installed an OS manually without reboot CD's provided by the firm. So... Im really helpless when it comes to it.

Hey,

A laptop pre-installed with vista is compatible with XP.

Installing it isn't that hard, just follow the instructions on the screen, easy as that, just make sure you back-up your personal files.

The only question is do you have a Windows XP installation cd?

If you have any further questions just ask them, anything your unsure about.

First job is visit the Tosh web site and sort out ALL the drivers needed for your machines build :-)

As previously noted back up any personal stuff (docs, pics, music etc)

Get into the BIOS and set the machine to boot from the CD drive (if its not already set up that way)

Arrange your self a 'Copy' of XP [black is nice]

In the drive and follow the prompts etc.

^Welcome Home^ etc

this looks pretty close to your machine by the looks of it.

have a look at Tosh site your self :-)

Natch you would select XP from the dropdown etc rather than Fista

Don't forget that the serial you currently use on Vista will not work for XP.

If you don't have a copy of XP, you can download them fairly easily. Look out for the integrated packages (which includes SP2 and all the hotfixes preinstalled), so there should be a minimal update if needed. That's right you can actually update to your hearts content with those CD's as well. I have Windows XP Pro Integrated October 2007 atm, but I believe November's edition should be available in a matter of days.

Alternatively you can look for a stripped edition of XP, providing it works as it says it should. This would probably give you better performance on your laptop as it's not using as many system resources.

Just don't forget to back everything up... music, software, documents, latest drivers and do forth. There's a couple of things people seem to forget to backup and that's the mail profile (if you download your mail to a client) and your bookmarks. Everyone always forgets the bookmarks. You only realise once you get up and running again and open your browser to find it all vanilla looking and bookmarks disappeared. Some people prefer to email themselves the bookmarks before the commit but I'd suggest both emailing and burning to a CD/DVD/2nd HDD (with other data of course).
