Dean: Bush wants billions for wars, but not for kids' health

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean on Saturday criticized Republicans in Congress for not supporting legislation to expand a popular children's health care program.

Democratic National Committee head Howard Dean addresses the "Take Back America" conference in June 20.

"The Republican leaders have made their choice. They want to stay in Iraq and deny our kids health care," Dean said in the party's weekly radio address.

He said Republicans support significant borrowing to continue wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but won't support the legislation to increase spending for the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

President Bush on Monday requested $46 billion to continue the war in Iraq and fighting in Afghanistan. The proposal brought to $196.4 billion the total requested for operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere for the budget year that started October 1.

On October 3 Bush vetoed legislation to add $35 billion over five years to the children's health insurance program. The House failed last week to override the veto.

The children's health care program is a joint state-federal effort that subsidizes health coverage for 6.6 million people, mostly children, from families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford their own private coverage. ( Listen to Dean's address »)

"America cannot afford four more years of a president who borrows for the war and denies health insurance for our kids," Dean said.

Dean also offered his prayers to those affected by the California wildfires and thanked firefighters, the National Guard and others who are lending a hand.

"You serve as a reminder that when we work together, Americans can accomplish anything," he said.

all political hoopla.hate this, hate that.all politicians are hated by a small percent of the population.hate is a very strong word used by many to make up for their lack of appropriate rhetoric in most topics.it is easier to hate than to communicate.smarten up.hate just leads to frustration and a short life.

Let's all move to Canada - socialism there.... 51% of your income is taxes

and

what I gather truth is nothing was taken away from the Kids Health plan [ extra $5 billion added ]

still

want to support 27yr-old "kids" earning some $85,000.00/yr = get ready for full health-care = half your income fed's will get !

OMG, you're actually busting out the old "socialist health care" argument?

what was it they used to say in the propaganda commercials, "ask the Canadians how they like it"? well i have and they do... health insurance is nothing more than a business in the US. designed to make companies tons of money while giving the consumer as little as possible. i'd rather pay a few more taxes (which i doubt is 51% of your total income) for full medical treatment, than to trust an insurance company to only give me the bare minimum

the UK and Canada are rated as 2 of the best countries in terms health care, while the US has dropped down the list to 32nd or something -- right next to Bosnia. i wonder why that is?

No offence, but UK best healthtcare????

Right then, when first time I've discolated my Knee- Waited 9 Months for opp (and shaby one)

Last friday I've dislocated it again.... Got appointment to see GP for forthcomming Friday (general practioner, which if by luck will redirect me to be seen by somebody in the field in a couple of month time)

Whilst today I've paid my own £191 ($250) for a treatment by chinese doctor, had my first accupuncture and massage, some herbal tablets, some spray (those that work), obviously cosnultation.

and

and I pay an extorionate taxes and national insurance contributions of my salary....

Healthcare is not something I would recomend for anyone to try UK

none taken, i was just using statistics as an example. the UK may have shitty waiting times, but the fact that they're attempting to use a universal health care system should speak enough...

let's put it this way:

1. Canadian & UK citizen have a longer average lifespan than those from the US

2. they have more doctors & nurses per-person than the US

3. they have lower infant mortality rates (almost half when compared to Sweden & Japan)

it's also kinda funny that even lower-middle class countries are also adapting a universal system (eg. Thailand & India). while the US continues to completely ignore the subject for fear of putting the insurance companies out of business

the bigger the bag of money, the more times its shifted arround/through/ and less of any effect left...

Idea as utopia yes! sounds great, but I had to learn all of it myself and end up paying for private treatment myself. At some point that would have been a good system, though these days piles of skyvers and incopetent overpaid, lazy, stricking, incopetent "doctors" ( more like veterinarians) here. Unfortunately I cant back it up in statistics, but reality is such

Big Corporations.. root of problems... I know thats a cynical view.. but it is partly right.

They depend on making profits.

And perpetual profits.. year after year.. as iff there is no end.

One way of doing this by taking more and giving less...

In the process loose human touch

If everyone got treated... they loose money.

So find ways how to get past/round it...

Employees are in pressure of meeting their targets...

They forget(they have to) its someone in pain..in trouble that is relying on their help.

Consider urself in a small town where u know of the ppl

Wouldnt u help someone if they met with an accident.

Wouldnt u deny him the insurance.. if u knew his financial condition ?

With Big companies... we bcome customer... we are no longer ppl, not a frnd not a relative.

All philosophical bull shit

dont know about that. i know that most of the countries in the worl(especially the british commonwealth, pay a flat 50% income tax.no exceptions.we pay on a sliding scale and most of the power elite can make enough with deductions to beat it.so we are stuck paying for everything.thats why we dont have socialized medicine.

From a TV add, it says that there is the same amount of money spent every week for the efforts of war in Iraq that it would take to fund this childrens benifits program for a year.

If that shows you have f***** up Bush is then it really shows.

@dock - you have a point, but there's also been debates about a 'hybrid' system. basically, if you can afford insurance and you can go to an insured physician then you should. but if you're too poor to afford insurance (like the 5M staters atm) then there should be a place to go funded by the government to get the required care.

yes, it can be abused, but like everything else in the US it can be regulated and governed with statutes etc. i mean, i'd feel better letting a few assholes use the system (and maybe get around the law) than let another hardworking stater go without proper health care for fear of going bankrupt due to medical bills. which can be counted towards your credit as of a few years ago, btw. another example of the g-man signing bills for big business over it's citizen...

Finally something we can agree on, which is to change the healthcare system. The first mistake (and biggest one) was to let Corporations (Profit Seekers) to run such area. I wouldn't mind paying 50% of income as long as I (and everyone else) was getting the necessary medical attention when I need it. Like Nsane said about the hybrid system, it would be acceptable if a few dicide to abuse it, as long as the majority of the working class members recieve proper health care.

Im full of hate cause I don't like alot of the stuff Bush does? Grow up.

Thats exactly how I'd feel, I too wouldn't mind whether people out there abuse the system (as long as it isn't too many people), as long as that mother with 3 children who's working 2 jobs to make ends meet would be able to recieve proper medical care.

I pay just a shade above $200 to get my parents, my sis and me Insured for a year.

The Insurance amount is $10,000... for a year.

Generally most of the major things are covered.

Got my dad operated with the amount this year.

I think the Insurance plan that I have right now is pretty Ok.

Not had any issues as of yet.

Yeah, but you see, we (I mean everyone, not just Americans) shouldn't have to live like that. The way its setup, it's kind of a "Take what you can get" sorta system which sucks. In my opinion, Healthcare system is one of those things that universally (all over the world) needs a good "tuneup" since it's not in it's best shape. Personally my healthcare is pretty good, it's not bad, but it could be alot better though. So heres to hoping that at some point soon the healthcare system will take a turn for the better.
