Scaling Modes. Eye Candy 6 adaptively scales filter effects to the current image size, making it easy to get great looking results quickly. For those who want precise control in a graphic design production environment, Eye Candy also supports a fixed mode, which allows the filter effects to be specified precisely in pixel units.

Settings. Settings have been reorganized and now have categories. If you are new to a filter, the Settings Tour category takes you on a trip through the filter’s most interesting effects. The factory settings were completely remade. There are now over 1500 carefully designed settings that handle a wide range of common design tasks.

Fire. The Fire filter now looks more natural. Sharp edges have been smoothed to look more like realistic gaseous flames.

Panels. Panels for Photoshop CS4 are provided for starting Eye Candy filters with a single click and for quickly creating attractive buttons.

Non-Destructive Editing. All of the filters now have the option to draw their output on a new layer. In Eye Candy 5 this feature was only available on some filters and it didn’t work the same for all filters. Now all filters consistently apply their effect to a copy above the original layer. The new layer is named after the setting used. All of the filters work as Smart Filters when applied to Smart Objects in Photoshop. These features contribute to a non-destructive workflow.

Professional Features. Eye Candy is made for professionals in demanding production environments who need support for 16-bit/channel images and CMYK mode. Eye Candy 6 now takes advantage of multi-core CPUs to run fast on modern machines. Eye Candy 6 is one of the first plug-ins to work with the 64-bit version of Photoshop.

Alien Skin has announced a new release of its Exposure 3.0.5.1075 Revision 15939 plugin for Adobe Photoshop, which allows photographers to replicate the look of a wide range of films or photographic processes, as well as a providing a variety of other special effects.

Alien Skin Exposure 3 is available immediately, and works on either the Windows platforms with Adobe Photoshop CS3 to CS5, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 or 3, Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 or 8, and Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X3. Exposure 3 works as a 64-bit plugin on both platforms, providing access to more memory.

This, coupled with a rewritten user interface, has brought a significant increase in speed. Preview rendering using Photoshop CS5 64-bit is said to be 30% faster on the Windows platform.

Other changes in the user interface compared to the previous release include the ability to use the mouse wheel to quickly adjust zoom by arbitrary amounts, a drag-and-drop function that lets users duplicate a factory preset as a user preset, and the ability to add text descriptions to user presets. These comments appear as a tooltip when you hover over the preset, and some factory presets now include descriptions by default. Beyond the user interface, Alien Skin has also greatly expanded the range of presets on offer, with new categories including Cinematography and Lo-Fi allowing users to mimic the look of movies or toy cameras, for a total of over 500 factory presets.

A new Dust and Scratches feature enhances the ability to give photos the impression of age. Dust and scratch size and quantity can be adjusted, and positioning can be repeatedly randomized until you're happy with the effect. There's also a vignetting function with variable color, shape, and feather, and blur can also be vignetted so that image corners show less detail than the center of the frame. Further vintage films such as Autochrome, early Kodachrome, and Technicolor have been added, and Exposure 3 can also create unusual coloring reminiscent of cross-processed film.

Alien Skin Exposure 3 groups presets into two types -- either Black & White, or Color -- and these are accessed as separate plugins for Photoshop users. In Photoshop Lightroom, Exposure 3 appears as an external editor which can edit only sRGB TIFF files, which Lightroom automatically generates from Raw or JPEG files as needed. The user is prompted whether they want a Black & White filter or a Color one, when Exposure 3 is called by Lightroom. Batch processing is possible for Lightroom users, and when each image in the queue is edited, you're prompted whether to apply changes and then adjust the settings again for the next picture, or to apply the same changes to all photos in the queue.

The Filter Window

Title Bar (A): The title bar displays the currently selected filter, in addition to the currently selected setting (see Maintaining Settings, below).

Tabs (B): You can access the advanced controls for each filter by selecting one of the tabs above the settings area. Refer to the filter chapters for detailed control descriptions. You can click the Settings tab to return to the setting lists.

Show Original, Split, Move and Zoom ©: The Show Original, Move (hand), and Zoom (magnifying glass) buttons are found above the preview window.

UpToDate Message Indicator (D): When you see this visual cue, you have a new message from Alien Skin Software. See the UpToDate Messages section for more details.

Split Screen Preview (E): Above the preview area is a menu of options for split screen previewing. When enabled, this feature shows the original image in half of the preview. The entries in the Split Screen menu specify the orientation of the split line or simply turn it off.

OK and Cancel Buttons (F): Clicking the OK button applies the filter with the current settings. Clicking Cancel closes the filter window without applying the effect.

Mouseover Help (G): Whenever you move your cursor over a user interface element, a short description appears in the bottom left corner of the window.

Preview Area (H): Preview the effect on your image here. Resize the filter window to make the preview area larger or smaller.

Navigation Thumbnail (I): Click and drag the movable red box to move the preview to any spot in the selected layer.

Progress Bar (J): The rectangle to the left of the magnification indicator displays the percentage of rendering completed.

Magnification Indicator (K): The current level of magnification is shown to the right of the render status bar at the lower right corner of the filter window.

Factory Settings (L): The settings that are included with the product are displayed in the factory settings list. Click on any of these settings to try them on your image.

User Settings (M): The user settings list contains settings that you create.
