this software is the one of the only open source and transparent solution to password and information management and it is not the front page? i do not understand this.

I have moved over to this recently from being a roboform user for a long time. I needed the browser functionality that robo form provided and i found an opensource plugin that does that just that, in fact the plugin is so good even though it's still in development. It works with basic auth in Firefox too. Keep in mind though that it is meant to be a password manager. Plugins give it extra functionality. it is browser independent.

I understand why people can like like lastpass even though i would never use it. But seriously if you have a closed source, cloud only option available for password management, surely it would not be to hard to front page a tried and tested open source alternative? Fair enough i could not find a good way to deal with importing safe notes from roboform to keepass (logins exported/imported fine), but once i had i much prefer the way keepass handle the safe notes, having them related to specific logins and viewable without the possibility of editing.

I'm not going to try and sell the program it's just that i put a lot of thought and research into moving away from roboform and landed with keepass and it just bugs me when i look at the "Other Apps > Miscellaneous Applications" section and don't see it but i see lastpass. Especially if you consider how something like AES came about and how, you might appreciate the idea of promoting an opensource alternative alongside the closed and proprietary ones.

note: for any lastpass fans, do not get all upset . I know what lastapass is, what is does, how it does it and it does not fit into my security policy. If you like it and are prepared to use it fine, i don't really care. I understand its convenience.

note: 2 i moved away from roboform 7 since i refused to patch it, handle hundreds of logins, notes and stuff and they had just redone their licensing policy.

note: 3: google keepass and dropbox for syncing if that's your thing.

lifehacker on password managers

this came after i had reviewed lastpass for myself and refused it

so can we get keepass 2.15 on the front page?

strange ,

but

assuring ...

@a2z

could you tell the steps you did , to get it working ?

i mean ,

did you install KeePass Before installing the Keefox extension ?

or after ?

like , when you install the add on , and then it tells you to configure Keefox ., download the exe or Zip ...

( dont remember exactly , like it said locate the executable or install Keepass , dont remember that ... )

and do you have No Script installed in FF ? does it interfere ?

and last ,

is it that good in identifying the form fields and filling them ?

like Lastpass is really intelligent in this matter ....

reviews please ...

@majithia23

  • Install keepass,
  • Create database,
  • Close keepass,
  • Install keefox,
  • Allowed keefox to connect the plug to the database,
17x014.png
  • launch keepass and enter master password,
  • ready.

No messages "to configure Keefox" or "download the exe or Zip" did not appear. No Script not installed. Аbout the forms can not say anything as it is automatically selected :) There is also a manual setting. I have not tried.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

you need to have keepass installed. Go to the keefox website and install the plugin, When firefox restarts you should get redirected to a page on the author's website that will ask to finish the install by installing the plugin. so you have 3 parts, Keepass, the plugin and the firefox extension.

as for the login detection, it is pretty damn good. So far it has only failed me on 1 login and that was for ajax explorer with a odd ajax/javascript login popup box. apart from that it has worked with anything i have used it for so far including htaccess type login boxes (it has a drop down menu). i use it with auto fill but have auto submit disabled.

oh yeah, i am a long time no script user and it has not caused any conflicts. i also have about 25 other popular plugins that work fine alongside keefox. When it doesn't auto fill there is a gold key icon that is missing from a2z's screen shot. if you click on it, it drops a list of all , lets say, google logins. This is curently working for me with google and no script forced htttps for example.

@a2z, fortheloveof,

thanks for the heads up guys ...

got it working ... :)

( second thing -- how d you get a small icon for the Keepass/Keefox in your FF status bar , its a whole tool bar in my window ..

if there is an option to get it , then i dint see it yet ,,

just installed it ,

too tired to configure it ..... :P )

i guess it had to be my Firefox's over aggressive settings, ( or to a little extent , corrupt Keepass database , it was quite old , hadnt used it ... )

which was interfering with the set up ,,,

but its running now ..

lets see , how well behaved this Keefox extension is now ... ;)

majithia23, simply drag&drop icon into the toolbar. Then you can hide unwanted keefox toolbar.

i was expanding on the syncing options of this today here is what i figured you can do if you have a remote host you can sftp to.

1: use keesync ( a plugin) to sync you databases to Amazon s3, digitalbucket or over scp/sftp . supports private keyfiles using putty profiles, pageant and plink. For the sftp if you control the server then this the data is encrypted in transit (the databases are already encrypted) . You can also use goodsync for this since it can sync over sftp using a putty profile and keyfile or though entering the details.

2: fun . use Dokan to mount a sftp share in windows, like a network share, kinda awesome actually. then use truecrypt to create a small encrypted volume on the sftp share drive and mount it. Then sync your data using say goodsync or you favourite program. This way i have encryption in transit as well as in the remote location. Total control over my stored info.

3: oh yeah i almost forgot. use dropbox. you can use goodsync here to i guess or actually use the drop box as the database storage.

you can't have this much fun with lastpass or roboform :D (well you could do it with Desktop but maybe not the browser only version)

The keesync option is kinda the same in principle as the lastpass or Everywhere idea of 3rd parties handling the data. But 1: i have a choice and 2 : i always have a local copy which can backup to my hearts content. and with Method number 2 there is an encrypted database inside an encrypted volume that syncs over sftp(ssh). Yeah i can live with that for remote syncing,

Would you consider writing a guide about KeePass?

You seem to know A LOT about it and I'm sure many would be happy to learn from your experience. Have a look at the Guides & Tutorials forum :)

In the mean time we will evaluate your suggestion in the staff forum (do not sometimes this takes quite some time ;)).

If we decide to add it at a later point we could feature your guide in the listing.
