fugitiv3
hey guys ... just wanted some help and advice about deciding which Antivirus - Firewall - Antispyware should i install on my pc. Which ones are the best and have light impact on cpu? I am currently using Nod32 Antivirus... should i install eset smart security to get the firewall too? or shall i download a different firewall? I have also read that there are some addons in FF that help to protect you..any suggestion will be appreciated!!
Siddharta
The answer to your question depends to a large extent on your processor and operating system ;) . Nod 32 has little impact on CPU but you'll need a firewall (perhaps Comodo which I neither trust nor like it 100% despite its popularity among Nsaners or Eset light firewall from Eset Smart Security which is good enough depending on how you use your PC..)+ plus Malwarebytes' Antimalware + SuperAntispyware (standard or portable)! If you have a powerful processor I'd advise a seemingly more robust security suite like Kaspersky Internet Security + Malwarebytes too ;)

I dont know if thats a bug with KIS2011... for now i am going to download malwarebytes + superantispyware but what about the firewall?
toyo
KIS2011 properly configured should be enough for you. I used KIS for years, and yes, there were some bugs (corrected in a few weeks after reporting). The lack of memory is not a problem (WIN7 x64 is constructed to let applications use as much memory as possible, to increase their productivity, not like XP), and naturally occurs when you have big archives/files that needs scanning. Make sure you select: Advanced Settings>>Concede resources to other apps. Again, KIS 2011 is a very mature application right now, should have minimum bugs, and run very efficiently. And you don't need anything else beside it, just scan with other stuff once every few months to make sure nothing escaped KIS (but in my case, there were no detections, ever). majithia23
if you are looking for a complete one stop solution that is light , secure and stable , i would recommend you go for Norton Internet Security .its got a great Anti Virus Engine , an Intelligent Network Firewall , and a Sonar Engine ( unique only to NIS ) , for Zero Day Malware Prevention and advanced detections ..the only down side Norton has ,. its detection algorithms make it to report slightly more false positives than other set ups ..if you would want a stand alone set up with individual components ,, Comodo goes great with ESET .Comodo comes with HIPS , Defense+.if you dont want this feature , you can disable it during installation .another great FW worth considering is Online Armor .it too has a good HIPS in it , but you cant turn it off .PCTools firewall is another good option . good FW and a lighter HIPS .a simple FW is all you want , then try the - Look n Stop FW .check here for the results -- Matousec ProActive Challenge you would need to try different FW options as as to see what suits you ,..as for AntiSpyware , there's hardly ever a need of any time real time anti spyware setup , IMO .just keep MalwareBytes for On Demand Scans , just once a week or a month depending on your surfing habits .if you would still like , you can go for Superantispyware , Spyware Terminator , Counterspy ...regards Firefox , yes it is a very secure browser , but the add ons are what makes it all the more better .indispensible and recommended ones are - WOTABP+ NoScriptBetter PrivacyGhosteryBeefTacoKey Scrambler Personal HTTPS Everywhereand run Qualys Browser Plus Check extension/FF add on just once in a month or as you like , so as to ensure that all the installed plug ins are up to date and there is no security patch yet to be plugged in the browser .hope it helps ... Bizarre™
@fugitiv3:ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus is already light on resources, so I believe you don't need to replace that.As for firewall, you can choose among: COMODO, Outpost, Online Armor

Siddharta
You could install Sandboxie to run scary keygens in an isolated virtual environment without having to install Virtual Box and another operating system inside it... ;)
avmad
If you wanted to carry on using Nod32 AV I'd install Commodo everything but the av. Its freeIf you want more then Sandboxie,Geswall, Bufferzone Pro free or DefenseWall. Just 1 will do :o For definite I'd use True Image and make full backups every week or so on an external HDD. Most important thing imo. Only thing that can save you 100%, usually what I need due to me messing things up.Then use Hitman Pro for scanning (no cleaning) unless you want to register it.Malwarebytes, SAS Portable and another scanner of your choice as ondemand scanners.Commodo CCE to check running process with Killswitch, or scan with CCE.Or an all in one Commodo, Kaspersky or Avast. I forgot Open DNS I use know or you could use a malware specific one such as Norton etc.Just my opinion. I use Avast IS on Desktop, CyberGhost vpn sometimes, TrueImage and on demand scanners.Laptop I use Kaspersky IS and Bufferzone Pro and ondemand scanners.Mainly depends on what I have a free license for though.

grouchysmurf
You know, I always see this type of question in just aboutevery forum I read, and the recommendations are always as varied andwell thought out.....but, there is only one real solution to system protection......................................................................................................................................................system back up and recovery. As an example, I offer this small suggestion:Get a copy of the very latest Norton Ghost build.Run a complete system scan and back up. Make sure to store the backupon something other than the drive you are backing up.Then, using the built in wizard, assemble a bootable recovery disk. The initial backup will take about an hour to complete, but after that, using a once a week strategy of backing up, the entire run will be reduced to mereminutes. This is probably the strongest method for protecting your system. If you have an external HDD, use that to store your backups. When I created my boot disk, it included usb support automatically so that mybackups could be pulled when needed. Then feel free to use whatever protections you wish to use. It is just a matter of what works wellfor you. Do not be afraid to try different programs, and remember to create backups first anytimeyou plan to "experiment" with security software.

toyo
@Viktor: KIS has an AntiSpam module. Why do you need more?

toyo
Although I advise against installing another application just to take care of spam... here are two that are free and do their job:http://www.comodoantispam.com/http://www.mailwasher.net/As grouchysmurf said before, even Gmail (or Yahoo, or Hotmail) do their job good enough. Using Gmail in IMAP mode together with a client like The Bat!, Opera, or Outlook will allow you to "teach" it how to act. For example, I have KIS, but don't use the AntiSpam module, because Opera/Gmail are smart enough to decide what should go where. And when there's a mistake, I simply drag the email where it belongs, and the next one from that sender will be properly placed.
Viktor
thx. toyoI like outlook..Care-taker Anti-spam (Hitmanpro) & Spamfighter could be something :sneaky: Now on KIS & Counterspy (on-demand)Waitin for ESET 5 Beta...Sooon :P
