Wheelie4
Is blocking adverts a crime?I don't think so, nah.I mean, adverts pay for stuff, so is it right to block them?I think it would depend on the sites, some are overkill with adds. I think us individuals need to strike a balance. Like I use Opera as my default browser to manage site preferences (cookies, scripting, java, popups) for visiting specific sites I'm a member of and visit daily like here for instance and sites I trust for shopping. I don't use add filtering at all in Opera to support those sites. But when I do more widely random surfing I like to use Firefox w/Adblock Plus (or Adblock+Filterset G.) among other extentions so ads are blocked

vin3e
I agree. I mean maybe back then it was a nuisance with so many ads on slows connections but now it has not become a bother since most are using adsl.Ads are fine however, there are some that just are plain out there to extort you such as "You have won" ads and erotic ones. In particular I dislike banners that have sounds when you point your mouse over. It can hinder an individuals experience and ultimately force them to install an adblocker. Chicano666
Ads are ok, as long as they don't disrupte the user. I like Google's approach, by using text instaed of banners and graphics. It is simple and doesn't cause distractions. This is one of those cases where for a few bad apples, everyone pays the price. Ad blockers ar installed because they can be obtrusive or advertise Adult material, or just plain annoying. Software that blocks all advertisement is an infringement of the rights of web site owners and developers. Numerous web sites exist in order to provide quality content in exchange for displaying ads. Accessing the content while blocking the ads, therefore would be no less than stealing. Millions of hard working people are being robbed of their time and effort by this type of software.I don't think it would be stealing, since the information is available to the public and not held privately. It does however affect but this may aslo be resolved if the Ads displayed were not of hindrance to the user.
1+1=FG
Adverts are fine, as long as I don't have to see them when browsing the internet. Now U-tube is going to add adverts too, it's a nuisance :P
Samurai
Banners, small images etc... I'm normally fine with. Pop-ups, noisy ad's and erotic ones (especially on sites that children may use), I have problems with. There was a site I used to go to, to host mp3's for streaming but they had one of the most annoying banner ads on every single page. Even on the upload part of their site. It was the one with the mosquito buzzing making noise and you had to zap it to shut it up (which led to an ad-click thus spawned pop ups). I eventually gave up on that site, like many others and found somewhere much more reliable without the intrusive ads.My take on this would be that if they're unobtrusive and just sit there, then fine. I don't want mosquito noises coming out of my speakers, nor do I want "Hellllooooooooo!" coming from a similar smiley ad. If someone goes out of their way to design an ad, or place one on their site which, IMO, disturbs my privacy then I'd sooner not visit it ever again. They're just far too intrusive for my liking.Advertisers have progressed through the years from making simple text adverts, to animated images, to pop-ups, and now those that make noise. Where will it end? I'll tell you when though. As soon as I click that [X] in the corner and not visit it again. Ad-blockers are fine, but then those smaller sites will always need revenue from somewhere to give the public what they want, be it music lyrics, film reviews or even warez. They just need to remember that users only have a tolerance that will go so far.

dMog
OK...so what about the sites that have so much ad activity that it is extremely hard to navigate or...simply offensive porn banners...I agree we should not totally block all adds but do i want to see porn banners just because they pay the host site more than other advertisers do? And remember the ad blocker came about because so many sites had so many ads and pop ups...it was over kill...
