Turn Your Computer Into a Cloud With Tonido

tonido_logo.png

Tonido is a free home server solution that makes it easy to host your own files and web apps from your home or business. It's available in several different forms: as a free download for Windows, OS X, and Linux, as a $99, plug-sized, mini server, or as an upcoming hosted cloud server.

The TonidoPlug is a popular ARM based Ubuntu server that you can get setup on your home network in minutes. Just as easily, though, you can turn your PC into a Tonido server for free while still using it as your own normal computer. You can then access your files and run free web apps from Tonido without adding on expensive monthly subscription costs and uploading your data to a dozen services.

Getting Started

Ready to setup Tonido? Download the correct version of Tonido for your computer, or setup your TonidoPlug according to your instructions. On my Windows 7 PC, installing Tonido only took a few clicks, and within seconds it was quietly humming along in my system tray.

Create Your Account

Once the install is finished, the Tonido dashboard will open in your browser. You'll need to create a new account to start using Tonido. Select an account name for your computer; you'll then use this address as yourname.tonidoid.com to access your Tonido from any computer. This is the only data that will be stored outside of your computer. Everything else, from your password to your files, will stay right on your own personal machine.

Accessing Your Files

As soon as your account is activated, you can start browsing your computer from the Tonido interface. It'll automatically be able to browse and display any file on your computer. In fact, you could never touch Tonido again from your main computer and still be able to access your files from any other computer worldwide via your yourname.tonidoid.com address. It's that easy!

We've all left important files at home when heading on a trip, but if you've got Tonido on your computer, this is no longer a problem. You can browse your files or even search your entire computer remotely. Seconds later, you'll be downloading your files right from the Tonido web interface. Problem solved!

Stream Music From Anywhere

Remote file access is nice enough, but Tonido has more features than just that. You can share files with others, stream your music remotely and more. The JukeBox feature does require a bit more setup, though.

Open the Jukebox from the Applications list on the left, and then select the music folder you want Tonido to index.

You can access your files without extra setup, but some include apps take some TLC

Once it's indexed your files, you'll be able to stream your music and play it though any browser. The only downside is that the player is powered by Flash Player, so it doesn't work on iPad or browsers without Flash. For the most part, though, that shouldn't be a problem. The JukeBox integrates with the Tonido mobile apps as well, so once you've added your music you'll be able to stream it on the go!

Add New Apps

You can also expand your Tonido with extra apps. There are tons of apps available for Tonido that let you download torrents remotely, manage your projects and contacts, write a personal blog, manage your money, backup files remotely and more. Click the Get More Apps link in the left sidebar to explore everything you can add to your Tonido. If you find something you want to use, just click Install to add it to your personal cloud.

Discover new apps to add to your Tonido

Once you've added a new app, you'll need to activate it before you can start using it. Click theManage tab in the apps list, then scroll to the app you just installed and activate it. If you later decide you don't want the app, you can deactivate it or remove it from your computer.

sshot-2011-02-02-1-620x138.png

Don't forget to activate your new app from the Apps list!

You'll now be able to use your apps right on your computer or remotely. The biggest thing most of us want from web apps is to be able to access them from anywhere, and Tonido gives you this with your own computer and internet connection. Now you can locally manage your own apps and make your data more secure.

You know.. I honestly feel this is a little bit of a ' false advertisement ' turning your computer in a CLOUD... Don't get me wrong this seems like a nice thing.. all-in-one in a box...

Cloud computing .. IMO.. from what I know, consists of much more than running a server with files.. from your home system.. I have several server resources... which cover most of this.. if not all of.... From what I know of Cloud computing, it is using the combined resources of peer systems for processing, virtualization, and file resources which come from many places.. and are run almost completely in RAM..

I mean.. Am I wrong.. or does this seem to simply target a marketing point.. We have networking for quite some time now.. being my point.. and servers and so on.. Does the server resources themselves run from other systems.. and how about transcoding? Are the resources themselves not editable?

@heath .

yes that is right for a cloud computing .

but you see , the Tonido people aren't talking about a public cloud where each and every one is connected and then interconnected and utilizing each and every ones resources .

Tonido enables you to turn your own computer into your own personal cloud which only you can access any time from any where .

"we started building Tonido as an easy-to-use solution that gave users the ability to access and share your files and apps via the browser from anywhere.Tonido offers a compelling alternative to online cloud services and allows you to run your own personal cloud using your existing computer. Keeping true to our mission - "Empower customers in a connected world" -Tonido offers universal access to your files, music and media from anywhere without sacrificing privacy, control and ownership of your data. now this sounds nice and easy ..

your pc any time from any where . and there is all you can do with it ...

and from reading all the tech forums and news , the cloud computing seems to be like becoming a big thing in next few years ..

Well see this my point though... Call it a technical point... but what I see here is simply being able to access your system via the Internet.. and your files and resources... I mean right now I have a CMF/CMS based system in which I can access my file system, connect to media with or without transcoding... Maintain the system.. delete, create, and edit using WebDAV... DNLA3 support for different devices... and mobile support ( when unblocked - stupid proxies :P ) ...I also have this done with different service layers involved as well as individual components/resources that can come is as secondary and tertiary service layers so that function remains even if a problem exist with one of the servers or the main - all private and for personal usage only... I can reach them using the home network... from system to system.. or from Bangkok if I want to... Does this mean my system has been in the CLOUD since.. say 2002? Not mention I can run programs I share virtually from one system to the next in my home network.. Though I keep this area shut down unless I need it for something and its worth the modding.. Will TONIDO offer me more than what I have now.. which I have complete control over the code and appearance? - is I guess the better question...

.. Let me make a point here I am not bashing the app in anyway at all..Okay.. its just that I have seen three recent applications.. Try to make a claim to fame.. in the last month.. pertaining to Cloud Computing... A little leery of it ... and if that is the definition of Cloud Computing then I have been doing it for over 9 years now.. since I began.. even with the simplest of thing.. I am wondering if this is the term given to the private sector versions of ' SERVER and CLIENT '.. To me it always meant the same thing business, corporation, hosts, clients, and home use.. Loose terminology versus cloud computing and applications... or is it to be something completely different here.. and of course the big question is when they are going to try to move in on the private sector to try to control and destroy it ( in general terms ).

Its cool to offer this to people.. right.. but I get skeptical when something sounds.. 'off' so to speak.. and I usually don't trust it as some others will not as well.. I mean.. put my computer i the cloud.. hmm .. I am thinking using multiple online systems to run applications I have installed which also run off of the resources from many peers and servers virtually inside a shell or container in any machine I wish... versus even online storage.. ( and there goes my privacy and some other things.. LOL - in the back of my mind ) always on always reachable... as a form of convenience and of course the online resources able to be reached by a mobile device..

i can get that .

you see , hosting an own web server and ftp transfer services for your own and your associated networks is not an easy job and rather not every ones cup of tea ...

u need to have a lot and know a lot many things ...

ok , i have been using computers and the internet from the last few years , and i can say i know stuff and things more than an ordinary or an average user which can help me get things straightend up . ( i mean most of us at nsane know that much ..!! )

but if i were to run my own servers n networks and services for my pc , i w'd say it would be a bit of an over kill/ too much for me ...

and when we talk of an average user , the daily user , some or many of them who dont even know what an internet browser is (.... they still think , explore the net with internet explorer and that is it ...!! ) ,,,,

telling him to run his own server and i think he would rather prefer to pull out his net cable than worrying over what that is ...!

and figure this 2nd scenario if you tell them -- " dude , just click here and you would be able to access your computer and all its files from any where without any fees and also do more than that .. " ,,,

and i think many of them would happily click and try out the service .

your pc from anywhere and free !

any body would go for it ...

that is what Tonido says it does ...

ok ,technically putting it into Cloud computing might be wrong , but the guys at Tonido advertise it as YOUR own personal cloud .

intsall Tonido

Log on ,

now access your pc from anywhere anytime ,

stream your media ,

and share your files ...

that is it ,

( i remember LogMeIn Hamachi also offers or offered such kind of a service . install a client and then access your pc from any where ... did try it once ....)

leaving aside all the tehnicalities of cloud or networks or servers , its just one simple and user friendly service , especially for the common user , to virtually sit in front of your pc from anywhere ,,, and i think it should be given a try ....

see.

thats what i say ...

that is how most of the so called / self confessing 'tech savvy' people are ....

morons ....

its very rightly said " the most uncommon thing in most of the common people is common sense . "

and i really find it hard to understand , that , is common sense so difficult a thing to apply ..! ?

a computer or a machine is as intelligent as the operator operating it .

nothing more , nothing less .. ;)

Well.. in some cases it is people's actual knowledge.. Just owning a computer and saying, ' Oh yeah.. I'm online.. ' .. especially people out in the country ( rural areas ) with lower income school districts which have already been 20 years behind in other areas..saying it ..doesn't mean a thing... Ya know.. I mean .. sometimes the Content of your words do not reach the brain.. so I think in many case it can be relative to the actual skills one actually has.. to follow direction and pay attention to the words as they are being spoken.. Attentive.. focused.. not dissociative.. some people's mind are like an open bag of flour.. Except your words which psychologically connect to what they know of it.. tends to be the bat swung at full force... thoughts exploding all over and covering way more than what you wanted.. dissociative to the subject matter as they have yet to discover the differences and in many ways the software and technology that is offered allows them to still operate a computer... easily...This same person I had to direct them over the phone to find out and if the light for charging her computer was on.. She had no idea..

SO in many ways you could see a little ' frustration '.. when someone teaches or stands behind something that is incorrect or even sends people in the wrong direction.. regardless of what gain it may have for themselves.. Its hard enough.. in other words.. :lmao:
