Samurai
Try installing a dedicated firewall. A good list was found here which shows a recent test for a few of them. Look out for the ones marked "Free".
Lee
Or try the current ESET Smart Security Beta 2, it's not bad for a suite.

ricksterto
AVG is famous for false positives.+1; the only anti-virus that is worse is the latest from McAfee - every version failed the testing primarily for false positives. AVG was second worse.

Administrator Lite Posted September 5, 2007 Administrator Share Posted September 5, 2007 Firefox has a large amount of still unpatched security advisories. There are roughly the same amount of advisories issued for IE 7.x as there is Firefox 2.x.Opera 9.x, hasn't as many security advisories as the others and 0 unpatched. It should be noted, as a general rule, the greater your market share, the more vulnerbilities people seem to find.Information from secunia.com. ale5000
See only the number of advisories is useless:The most severe unpatched Secunia advisory affecting Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.x, with all vendor patches applied, is rated HighlyThe most severe unpatched Secunia advisory affecting Mozilla Firefox 2.0.x, with all vendor patches applied, is rated Less critical
natakaasd
Save yourself the trouble of false positives or even "real" positives:-1. Use Firefox or other IE alternatives2. If you are using FF(Firefox), equip yourself with addons like Adblock, McAfee SiteAdvisor (This one is slightly controversial, but at least, you can personally decide the safety of a website. It is only an alarm :pirate: )3. You can opt to have a "SECONDARY" Anti-Virus program. This might not be agreed by a number of people due to crashes. Amongst the Anti-Viruses that I tested that Works with ESET NOD32 is AntiVir by AVIRA. Just disable the Guard of AntiVir and work should be a breeze. Just remember to update frequently (Please define frequently. I would suggest once every 2-3 days.) and SCAN your drives Manually4. Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy are must haves, well at least. AVG AntiSpyware is not too bad an option though. Good Thing, you don't need any patches or keygens for it. It will still work anyway, and its built in Guard isn't that good either.5. Prevention is better than cure. SpywareBlaster is another must-have.6. Get a firewall...Practice safe surfing habits and you should be safe. Cheers!

It should also be noted that an increasing number of ISP's are suspending users accounts if it is proven that their PC has become a Zombie PC.If that alone is not worth paying attention to, regardless of whether your backups are on a seperate drive... then do you really have the time, and energy to commit to a reinstallation of your operating system? Not to mention all of the software etc... to return it to how it was.Not playing it safe is why so many people are finding out the hard way about identity theft, fraudulent behaviour, email spamming and so forth. Turning a blind eye simply because you may not undertand it... or it sounds like too much hard work is not an excuse. I have repeated this to members of my own family, and when they choose not to take heed of warnings like this, I'll be there in the background to say "I told you so".The protection of your personal data should be paramount to any user. Always ensure you have a GOOD anti-virus, and a GOOD firewall. Don't neccessarily rely on free offers, or those that come on CD's when purchased with a magazine. Granted, there are exceptions, i.e Comodo Firewall... but in general, you really DO get what you pay for. On that note, I know most of you don't pay anyway :)Oh, and the freedom of the Internet as you mentioned earlier will still be around, no matter what protection you use.Don't let your guard down. May I recommend a sandbox approach for you? Get an extra pc. Run one for internet and be as carefree as you wish. Run one secure (with all of your personal stuff) or not on the internet at all. Then you can have fun and play in your sandbox.
