Administrator DKT27 Posted February 22, 2011 Administrator Share Posted February 22, 2011 BTW guys. How much RAM do you need for burning a DVD? A week ago I tried burning a MKV movie as a data file in Nero. Sized about 4.37GB (few MBs less than the DVD can handle). And it failed in the leading out. Hence, whole DVD was corrupt. Then I remembered that I read somewhere that you need about 4GB RAM to burn a DVD. I don't think that's true. Can be my drive dying, dunno. Same has happened to me for years until last 16-19 months after I bought this HP DVD RW. Well, I guess I'll try Ashampoo then.
HX1
Tried using lower speed? This is one of the reasons I used Nero.. I used to get all sorts of errors unless I used Burning ROM.. worked the best with the least hassle.. and the ?X Rates used to be troubling.. as the drive stated one thing.. yet I had to burn much slower to get a positive result.. and with other software even then it didn't matter.. I only have 2 GB RAM and I used to burn DVD's as data all the time..
Administrator DKT27 Posted February 22, 2011 Administrator Share Posted February 22, 2011 I always burn at the slowest speed possible. I'm waiting for my RAM to come back just in-case. I'm having doubts about my drive now. I've had exactly same problem burning video as data (can be other files also) on most of the older drives. And buying a new one only solved it. mara-
RAM does not affect burning in any way. That's for sure. So, your drive could be malfunctioning or disc your are buying are bad.Cheers ;)

ck_kent
@DKT27: I have burned a lot of MKV's with sizes ranging from 4.3GB to 8GB (dual layer) using just a Sempron 2800+ with 1GB RAM. I used ImgBurn burning these mkv files and it has yet to fail me even when using a generic DVD+R (single or dual layer). I used to use Nero but it almost always just gives me coasters of discs when burning a 6.5GB or an 8GB mkv file. The problem I had with Nero was, the burning is successful but when you play the movie and it reaches the middle of the movie or the layer break point of the disc, the movie just freezes. With ImgBurn, I never had that problem.

7even
Happy with Ashampoo Burning Studio too. All the features are useful, including capability to make auto start CD/DVD.

1chaoticadult
I have used Ashampoo Burning Studio similar to alot of people in this thread. But you could also try CDBurnerXP and its free. I haven't seen anyone mention this yet.
toyo
I'm using Alcohol since forever. But it needs good disks, as I found out that all my dual-layer DVDs I burned from one cheepo no-name batch were unusable... very annoying.
Jota.Ce
I used Nero, then Nero Lite (i think this is the most reliable burner).Lately i'm using InfraRecorder, as i like small programs. But i had to use ImgBurn to burn a DVD with certain requirements, it seems to be the most configurable program!I like also CDBurnerXP, but i hate .NET, so i only tried this at work.Anyway, i only like the burners where you can see the 2-way explorer view. I don't like drop-boxes. So Ashampooo and BurnAware are not in my list.
