IRC and Newsgroup question

So, how "safe" are IRC and Newsgroups in terms of getting "caught"? I know for like Kazaa, emule, bit torrent, etc etc you share files and people download off of you.. Thus, you can get caught. What about IRC and Newsgroups? Ive been using them for a little bit and Im just trying to connect them to for familiar networks :pope:

only people that have to worry in IRC are the servers, all file requests are private. so they don't know your downloading, only that they're sharing :pope:

Newsgroups are relatively safe too... they've been around for a long long time, before all the p2p apps started appearing :pope:

I'm not sure but I don't think anyone has been convicted for dl from newsgroups to the best of my knowledge.

back in late 90's the newyork ag try to serve warrents on the newsgroup servers. it was declared an illegal law and action. most ngs keep some form of a log on you. i would think they delete it after so long or after your monthly bill is pay if you pay for ngs. as before the illegal dmca its the uploading that can get you into trouble. without going and checking the headers im pretty sure the kiddy crap is still posted in certain rooms. ngs are a good way to get exe virus. the usually scam header etc etc crap. just check the file line size. now with ngs you have to know and understand rar, ace and zip a little bit unlike with p2p large files. get winrar 3.5+ that new versions give you some protection from virus and exe crap in them. oh and you will need an actually real newsgroup reader. not netscape nor IE.

the way most fbi stings work with ngs is that they try to get you to go to a website and give a credit card to a server they have taken over. usually softcore to being with. they then email you to buy tapes and disk over the postal system. then busting you when they deliever it. remember the web policing actually falls under the u.s. postal system. those bastarders are still trying to tax faxes and emails every so often.

check your isp out, they might have a free newsgroup offer to begin with.
