Rock Lee
It may be a weird question being that I'm on a forum full of multi-software users but what the heck why not give it a try?Do you still use an antivirus? I personally do not anymore. Don't see the need to. I think that this whole virus thing is just one big conspiracy that those companies are making up so we can give them our monies...Gotcha :P
Marik
anti-virus?...noI do use MBAM from time to time....say once or twice a month.I also can't find a reason to keep an av around when all I browse are sites that I have bookmarked, and know that they're not harboring any malicious files that would put my system in danger...and yes, most of them are anime/manga one's

*dcs18
Sometimes (like 4 months in a year,) I try out an anti-virus from different mainstream Developers each time, whenever there's a major upgrade available. The prime reason for the installation is not protection but learning - am a strong believer, that for one to be making opinions on any program on a very authoritative note, one needs to have used the said program over a protracted period of time, himself. That said, 8 months of the year - I don't use the remedial services of an anti-virus (prefer preventive measures.) 8)
Alpha1BA
Im sort of the same dc18 in the fact that i frequently test mainstream and not so mainstream solutions but YES I do normally have a resident av namely Norton 360.

Darker_Than_Black
Antivirus are for noobs :lol:Not really. It's not like a persons mind is alert all the time to notice the difference between safe and unsafe files. It's true that common sense is needed to avoid unwanted and unnecessary annoyance brought about by malware. However, what if said malware is so advance that even common sense fails to recognize it? Sure you can use HIPS, sandbox, virtual environment, etc., but those who have a little bit of insight knows that they can only do so much. No security is infallible, and I'm not saying an antivirus will necessarily save the day. Malware programmers are so persistent that I'm sure many are familiar with 0-day threats. My point is "layered security".If you ask me if I'm using an antivirus, then I say yes. If the heuristics of an antivirus can save me from wasting my time in restoring my files through a backup or reinstalling my OS from scratch, then I'll gladly install one on my system along with other security programs forming a layered security. Rock Lee
Not really. It's not like a persons mind is alert all the time to notice the difference between safe and unsafe files.I've been doing this for a long, long time and I believe that I can tell the difference between legit and phony. In my opinion it's actually not that hard to figure out, a trained mind can see the differences clear as day. Doesn't take much work either, you just have to be well informed... I like to compare some file sizes in torrents to authentic downloads on the legit sites if a installer is included; sometimes i just download the fix from the torrent and use the installer from the source. I never download from a tracker/indexing site unless its well established or member oriented with strict rules or guidelines.btw, if you think a program on networks like gnutella are good, chances are you have a virus. also, if you think you can just google "crack for ??????" and randomly download from random websites you have a virus. Darker_Than_Black
We are entitled to our own opinions, so don't stop me from expressing mine. It's true that you have to be well informed, but I don't believe that anyone can be that well informed. Besides, even if you are well informed, shit happens. In a realistic point of view, not everything goes as planned. That's why people refer to contingency plans, which is very much connected to what I said earlier "layered security".Lastly, I'm just correcting some people who's got the misconception that they are better than others because of certain circumstances. tipo
i use shajt` s prevx `cause it`s very light but my main defense is bufferzone. most of the malware comes from the internet or by autorun from sticks or dvd/cd (but they`re isolated)...ATM i am learning linux and just love it, so no AV in the future... *dcs18
The reason why my family is able to lead a better-than-average-lifestyle is chiefly due to the anti-virus - let me explain. :DWhen I analyze my business track record over the last calendar year - it tells me that more than 90% of the time I make a new Customer simply because of his urgent requirement for an anti-virus. It also transpires that in the age of evolving OS and hardware, one doesn't mind adopting an additional layer of protection. In India, the anti-virus is seen as indispensable - probably holds true for most other countries, too. :dunno:

T0nyB
Yes, I defenately use an antivirus (ESS 4.2 with original, paid student key, never sharing).IMHO anti-viruses are needed, you never know when it could be needed (for example, when you insert a friends USB flash drive).I use ESS 4.2 (like I said above) and SUPERAntiSpyware Professional. I've also stopped using cracked exe's as well. If the software doesn't have a patch or a keygen I just keep the trial until one is released. And you're absolutely right. If you've been doing this for a while you should know what sources to get your fixes from. If you just google willy nilly chances are much higher that you'll download a virus. There has to be a method to your madness.
