Windows 7 Ultimate x64 issues

Hi guys,

I am having some problems with my laptop on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Operating System.

This have happen twice already and both times I have to give up and reformat.:why:

What happen?

After installing some programs (not the cause of it, because its working fine on another computer), my x32 programs is unable to startup.

Example: firefox (x32) is unable to access internet, so is IE8 (x32). But IE8(x64) just work fine.

Micosoft office(x32) show some error and unable to open up.

Eset AV too unable to update through the internet.

I am using wireless, but even with a fixed line....firefox or IE8 (x32) is still unable to acccess.

Its definitely not my modem or router as the rest of my computers encounter no problem (both x64 and x32).

I have tried to repair winsock and TCP/IP, but to no avail.

Searching through google produce no answer.

Scan for virus, spyware or malware produce nothing.

I have turn off System Restore both occassion and after the second re-install...I am going to leave it on.:pope:

What I can't understand is, I know something is corrupted but sfc \scannow produce nothing too.

It took me hours to re-installed all my softwares and get my laptop back to the original condition.:x

If anyone know of an answer, would greatly appreciate it.

Don't know when it will happen again!!:frusty:

When I load a new Win 7 OS ( regardless of 64bit or 32 bit ) the very first thing I do is go and disable the UAC, until I get all my software/programs loaded on to that particular OS that I want

next thing I do is, I never install any programs to the program files or the program files x86 folders. I install all my programs to the C:\ root directory example C:\Firefox\

UAC being set to restrictively when OS is installed and people installing a 32 bit program in the regular "program files" folder which is actually 64 bit, have ran into all sorts of problems when installing Vista 64 bit or Windows 7 64 bit

these are only suggestions, as for using the restore feature of any windows OS..... it can cause you problems down the line if you use it alot causing registry errors and such

edit: and make sure you download all the important and critical updates, especially those that have to do with program compatibility issues for Windows 7 and 32 bit programs

My bet would be some drivers (network) are not working correctly as for M$ products- they crash because of M$ updates without explanation anw

Basicly your mobo simply has some components, that components are not x64 compatable

If the only problem is Internet access of them both.. Check your Proxy settings ( even though you may not have set them.. ) .. I am sure this probably won't be it though.. worth a check ... sometimes its in the settings..

@heath,

In both IE8 and firefox (x32), the proxy was at the default.

Base on what I have observed, there is no change in the setting of both browser.

Its just suddenly decided not to access internet.:frusty:

@Atasas,

I had remove the drivers for both wireless adapter and LAN. Re-installed the drivers again, but nothing works.

@dcs18

Can't remember the command line I had use......it goes something like this "netsh winsock reset" (as I am in the office now, the steps I have taken is left in my pc at home) but.....

@JohnnyBravo

I have use x32 for many years but x64 for just about 6 months and so quite a newbie with x64 OS.

By installing all the programs in a single folder(ie both x32 and x64) in C: drive, doesn't it cause any problem with the OS not able to read it?

My x64 OS come with my laptop (OEM) which is Acer..Core i3 with Nvidia graphic.

It come originally as Windows 7 Home Premium. (ie Slic 2.1 is already in Bios).

I upgraded it to Ultimate.

I suspect there is a corrupted .dll file somewhere but unable to fathom where or what causes it.

nope!

I appreciate as what you say, but Drivers are much more complex that what you described and hardware orientated more, so if one fails... appears as some other issue, but simply configuration errors just are as they are....

my $0.02ct still stand on such... :sneaky:

I do agreed with you.....but its gonna be one hell of difficult to troubleshoot if I will to go in that direction, isn't it?:fear:

If drivers were the cause of the adapter for wireless and LAN, therotically IE8 (x64) should also not able to access internet but it does without issue.

drivers... a bit of my specialism and hell... single driver trouble-shooting... lets put in example ways- It took me about 3 days to sort out incompatible sound driver to be good on win7, when one was unavailable... its one of the things, that is "supported by hardware manufacturer" or not and even, when actual chip corresponds to different one- means and ways it does operate depend on specific hardware configuration. on a mobo... :angry:

then you learn/find specific hd modulator... it doesn't work... because of unexplainable reasons ($$ issues of manufacturers) and there is ever so few guides or info on a singlr step as how to....

dude, getting depressed! and the reason as why I use basic drivers on most stuff

it is thought /advice, before installing, but once again some hd specific drivers in WM never will function fully...

ie- try Sony-Ericsson's connectivity in WM- no go- ever! once installed- no probs...

though WM is still better of an option to see as what how before full install! B)

not sure but this i can find..

http://social.answer...68-8f866d8db31e

I have sorted the problem, it was as you suggested an anti virus program causing it.

Once I had isolated the program( Securityshield Deluxe) and disabled it, all works well with Internet Explorer 32 bit.

LOL - the joy of x64 bit computing and x64 compatibility+ M$= nobody knows as what the heck...

Saw that, his is unique in the sense only IE8 is unable to access internet and firefox is working all right.

Mine situation is that all the x32 program is not working including firefox.

The rest of the x64 program is OK.

I am using Eset AV....but its unable to access internet too because the updating process is in x32.

On one of my desktop with EAV and x64 OS, this problem is never (touch wood!) encounter.

I am beginning to feel it might be a hardware driver problem....(Atasas)

@Atasas

3 days to figure it out?LOL!

I have reformat and re-install all my programs in less time than that.

Luckily I had all my files including .pst on another partition.

Since wireless adapter and LAN is using different hardware and driver. (wireless LAN is Atheros and LAN is Broadcom).

It can't be one of this as both wireless and LAN are not accessible to Internet for x32 browser. (unlikely to have both drivers failing).

Now what?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

The Microsoft way of resetting the 'WinSocks' and 'TCP/IP' has not always worked for me, either - can you try the following steps:-

01.) <Navigate to> "C:\Windows\System32"

02.) <Right click> 'cmd.exe' <and> 'Run as administrator'

03.) <Type> 'NetSh WinSock Reset'

04.) <Jab> 'Enter'

05.) ReBoot

Would love to try......but I had already reformat and its now working fine.:huh:

I am only wondering what could have gone wrong in case it happen a third time.:s

I have been using win 7 Ult. 64 bit since February of 09, and have seen multitudes of different problems & Scenarios...... even some programs that if left to install in their default installation settings ( ie.. program files folder or program files x86 folder ) have problems afterwords and fail to update correctly while helping others get used to Windows 7 64 bit

some software companies have defeated these situations by reverting back to installing their software to the C:\ Root Directory, the same way some of us were taught/learned 10/15++ years ago.... ( it also keeps from loading up/Stuffing the "2" different program files folders which will increase work load and search times when accessing the files for whatever SW you might be using )

I use ESET SS4 with no problems (all though my version is 64 bit ) , also have no issues with any app or software being installed directly to the root Directory...... regardless if it is a 32 bit SW or a 64 bit SW

also, as I mentioned, I personally do not have my UAC turned on, it is turned completely off, ever since I ran into problems back in mid 2009 with UAC in use and not letting certian software update correctly or asking me if something installed correctly or do I need to re-install in compatibility mode

I NEVER HAVE USED THIS LAST FEATURE OF UAC , I always would click, installed correctly...... but your mileage may vary

sorry I cannot offer much more than this, wish you luck

@ JohnnyBravo

I, too, on first installed Windows to disable UAC.

It has become a habit, in fact I tend to disable it when installing 7 on others' computers. LOL

But that does not seem to provide a solution for what I've encounter.

Not really a good idea if you don't enable again after your installation phase...

I have my UAC turned on and to notify me on everything... that way I know and can make a choice... On the Malware note.. That was one of the things I was thinking.. You neer know.. Its weird about the thing with installing to root dir.. I have to do that on x32 for Plone.. but it has something to do ( or did ) with being a native Linux written program..

I recommend trying sfc /scannow before re formatting. Gives you a idea if the system files/changes are modified of a software is doing this. Hopefully, there wont be any need to. :)

Well, the no virus after scan by AV and Malwarebytes.

sfc / scannow does not show anything too.
