implague
At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared thecomputer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon." In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release Stating, "If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part, especially 7th point and 10th point). 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car! 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads. 6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed an Illegal Operation" warning light. 7. The airbag system would ask, "Are you sure?" before deploying. 8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. 10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off. Never undervalue the manufacturing industries ……
toyo
Is this a real answer? Never thought GM have a sense of humour... Nice find, thanks.
LeetPirate
Yea dude was that an official reply? Would be even more hilarious if that were an official reply that made its way to news reports and stuff.

HX1
Thats actually kind of funny.. though.. I would like to comment that in ways.. GM and Microsoft have become quite comparable to one another.. Like for instance.. Having to drop the entire front clip of a front wheel drive car to replace an alternator giving you a cost of over $900.00 - $500.00.... Having to remove the intake, loosen motor mounts, tilt the engine, and acquire special tools to change your spark plugs and then having to pay the same additional hours ' per quoted in the book' for the mechanic to also replace the spark plug wires and a grand total of $500... Next.. we have changing out the battery which requires for you to remove support mounts from the frame..and undo three wiring harnesses... Then remove the MAF.. Intake tube, air box.. and filter.. along with those mounts... Then undo two more brackets.. remove the Windsheild wiper fluid container.. its pump ad wiring.. before you undo three more bots to remove the battery which will reset the car.. right down to your radio.. HMMM...Or change a belt.. of course which is going to take three covers, 9 screws.. 6 snap fasteners... and the removal un-mounting of a fuse box to get to the pulley which will release the serpentine belt... AND not to mention that you realize the wiring harness for the main computer is run directly over that belt and the engine.. where it will be hot.. and have the possibility of wearing through.. causing a sort which can fry one of three main systems.. which holds the chip for the car to run.. Which I might add to that is mounted on the passenger side of the car where it is most likely to become water logged in the event you should drive on wet streets or gutter areas.. HMM..Next of course we have how the entire car is setup and balanced improperly from front to back for proper handling... then the culmination of two timing mechanisms.. composed of seven pulleys.. one chain and one serpentine Belt.. which runs the dual overhead cams.. that can wear and stretch over time.. which also is located in one of the warmer areas of the car.. all of this just barely squeezed under the hood... with barely enough room to even work on... and fans that come on only AFTER the car is getting hot.. and ONLY if the air conditioning system is on.. air conditioning is off or not functioning you run the risk of overheating...or running hot.. or poor design which allows water to run into the controls for the windows.. and doors.. should you ever get out/in in a rain storm.. which tarnishes and blackens the contact terminals leading to malfunction and/or complete loss of...OH and the icing on the cake.. Poor design in the engine block which was taken from previous models which left a distributor ( old ignition system ) o-ring in place with a plug.. to keep the oil in the engine... which often times starts to leak.. which then gives you a loss of oil and sometimes oil into the transmission.. again on a Front wheel drive car which is labeled a GT... which cannot even stand up to normal use.. and actually is heavier than the regular passenger coupe..with extra plastic ground effects which have no function what so ever..and has to be constantly worked on at ungodly costs... thats when you can find someone who knows what they are even doing with the car.. at a 'Certified' Shop backed by the company itself... and at that they only want you to consider buying a new one.. and almost refuse you proper service..Funny thing here.. the vehicle I am talking about in question has long since be left to rot... But say you had a problem with the car.. which was in the firing of the cylinders.. or say a transmission error code is logged...The computer in this car throws on an ABS ( Anti-Lock Braking System ) light... and then gives you 10-15 minutes of driving time before your battery completely runs out... because the car shuts off the charging of the battery and interrupts the firing order on the car.. supposedly as a safety feature for the cars other parts and drive-train... Also known fact.. if you make a hard enough turn with a Hydrua-Matic transmission it will slip.. this also throws off lights and shuts the car down.. again.. as one of these features.. you DO have to pull to the side of the road.. shut the car off.. ( if your smart roll up the windows and walk away one last time ).. and restart.. then go to shop to see if you now need to replace the transmission or have it rebuilt..I guess what I am trying to say .. Is that Bill Gates must have a point.. because all too often this seems to ring true... General life of a vehicle 3-5 years.. How long in between re-striping? Had a Cougar which crashed twice for no reason because of a malfunctioning throttle body linkage.. Ever had a malfunctioning TWA built door locking module.. from GM? 9 is just simply true but where would we be without change.. and lastly .. The reason I know this is a joke.. is that I know nobody from GM or anyone else would put their heads on a chopping block like this after engineering cars in this manner and raking in so much money because of it.. and generalized stupidity.. or need and being backed into a corner with it..BTW: They both can cause you to loose your job, go broke.. and cut-off your ability to survive just long enough for your life to be ruined... and nobody can function properly without them in various conditions and considerable factors.. just adding that in for general shits and giggles.. HELD HOSTAGE...
LeetPirate
That's why I stick to Japanese imports. ^_^ Sure Toyota had a few setbacks with the recent recalls but atleast they bothered to recall and took responsibility for the problems. Although to be honest some of those reasons to recall a car depends on an absolute retard behind the wheel, but in America frivolous lawsuits take win so I guess Toyota didn't have a choice. Parts and supplies for Toyota and Honda are super cheap and the cars aren't that difficult to repair either, most things you can do yourself. On the topic of fuel efficiency well we all know Japanese cars win. You could even mix your own alcohols into your petrol since methanol is cheaper than gasoline. irefay
Yes, but at least Microsoft didn't need the US government to bail it out.
