With the desktop app is same as drop box, EXCEPT!

You can allow people to edit your files, it isn't a given. They don't get the right just by it being a shared folder, you set the limits.

You can choose whether subfolders are viewable, add a password, to a folder, or everything. make some files public and some not in a folder, with a share link to that folder.

You can make a widget or embedded version of your download folder, which people can click into from your forum page or home page. or social page.

but anyway, you can set many permissions, let people moderate a folder for example and they can set what is public what isn't. and more options.

What else... hm.. oh you can get a subdomain for your folder (and change your subdomain for each folder or subfolder at will) for example my music is at http://s2you.4shared.com/ OR my share link is http://www.4shared.com/dir/_-Hac3xW/music.html

can choose to display your folder as thumbnail or detail to people.

add a description, etc etc make a account profile page set what folders show up on your account.

Share your sync folder, so people have instant access to what you drop in it on your desktop or where ever you put it, rename your sync folder (just rename it then your desktop app will ask where it is and hence keep the name)

gives you batch links to the files in a folder in it's information tab

So it is basically the Drop box, favorite picture/thing folders plus the shared folders in one, if you want one shared, make a new folder, if you want one for yourself, make another.

Set privileges for each folder and make items in it viewable to public and not, searchable/downloadable/passworded/uploadable/editable by public or not.

You can add friends and view their stuff in your file list.

I don't know just thought i'd give a heads up.

I've had one for ages and NEVER use it, until I stumbled upon drop box and had a use for one... then actually took a look at my 4shared.

CONS:

It gives you like a half a year or something, then you have to login every 30 days for your files not to be deleted, except popular files (regularly downloaded ones) are kept.

Unless you go premium which is like $4.50 a month for a year..... which adds like 100gb or something idk... read up 4shared.com :D

Um change your user name, and some OpenID account (what ever that is) comes up as http://YourOpenID

so Must be a domain. idk.

and can change the e-mail it is associated to by sending them an e-mail... I just did it, because the e-mail I had ti with isn't valid anymore, they just ask for the e-mail password and new e-mail you want it with.

And actually respond P quick.

Oh

one last thing.

You can log in to different accounts (on the ONE pc) from the Desktop APP .... without re installing it, unlike Dbox xD

Oh you can edit all or most all these settings and manage files from the Desktop App (it is about 6mb), i.e. download from your online folders and friends from your own desktop. No web browser needed.

Note: These files are for my personal listening pleasure.

alien and dreamboat are songs i've mashed up, one contains a Brisbane band called um mm Dead Letter Circus,

and also the zip is a very hard to find album by a nice outback kind of Australian group called "things of stone and wood" (broken up)

they have fiddle and lovely lyrics and a great all round acoustic feel, I went around Aust as a kid, and heard them at a festival I was about 7

we have the cd signed, and I ripped it to play on my pc, but can't find it any where else, even for sale. I've tried e-mailing them to get more copies, but they are pretty hard to track down.

You may enjoy that also. They are ashamed of how raw the recording is, hearing everything they say as they kind of jam out some well composed tunes, but i love it that way.

That's nice they give you 10gb, but if they made the synching automatic it would be much more useful.

It is Auto-matic, you just have to dl the exe just like dropbox (and select start on windows start up), has a tray icon the same but when you dbl click it open a window with your account, just like the web version.

And the flash screen, has a login bar, so you can select different accounts or make it automatically sign into one and when you drop a file in the folder it uploads it to the same folder on your account. Which you can set to shared.

So people get real time access to your file; in a widget on your page, or just if you send them the link, and can password it if you like. + what ever else I mentioned ^_^

+5gb just for registering your e-mail

So 15gb, basically for signing up and clicking a link.

I used 4shared for a while, it's a good service but I decided to move to Microsoft's SkyDrive because it offers some useful features, not to mention 25GB of storage ain't too shabby.
