I need someone to explain truecrypt

So I have a usb say, I use true crypt then load data on which is subsequently encrypted.

I give someone the usb, when they plug it in, it will prompt for a password to access files?

Right so far?

And I could use axcypt for a single file on that usb, so they then after entering the password, can access all files, but then need a password to access one such single file?

I wouldn't need to include the excypt.exe would I, for them to access the file, it is merely for me to use in the case of encypting?

And I certainly don't need to include the truecrypt.exe because they wouldn't be able to access it?

So I am wondering, how the truecrypt software is removed from the usb?

Or is the software something that is on my PC, and in the utility it gives me options of what device I want to enable and disable the encryption service on?

Anyone see where/if i'm miss lead?

Thanks

Hello,

Give this a try:-

It's a lot easier to use and very secure.

I was using a USB more as an example, just so i get a fixed idea of what each program is, and how it functions (basically).

Ok I read about truecrypt... seems you must extract to usb, the run exe's. Create a travler volume and such.

but mainly have to run the exe again to unmount. which isn't as nice as having a pw prompt.

I will try axcrypt.

and just make a folder and encrypt the whole thing.

is it 7zip or winrar that you can add a password to?

WinRAR definitely allows passwords. I have a few RAR files that I password protect and use frequently. I don't use 7-Zip so I can't help you there (I tried it once, but I didn't like it).

Yeah but programs exist to the point that they are as easy to crack open as eggs.. :( If you are looking for a good portable encrypter and software that can go with you anywhere.. is fast and easy.. Try Toucan.. its what I use on my USB Flash Drive... Easy to use.. you can do a drive or folder or files.. all up to you..

EDIT: 7-Zip definitely allows Passwords as well.. and I may have exaggerated a little about cracking the encryption and passwords... but still... I like having a program that doesn't have a program out there specifically designed to break the encryption.. <_<

Thanks I didn't know Toucan. I'll try it with GoodSync (frontpaged).

axcyrpt has an on the go exe aka portable version that comes with the unpacked install, or download it seperately onto the usb/sd card to be able to unecrypt. just doesnt have the windows drop down menu integration.

Basically opens a file browser with the same option.

But true crypt seems like the sheez neezies. (Serpent-Twofish-AES 256; 256; 256 128 XTS ) LOL

Encryption Algorithms

TrueCrypt volumes can be encrypted using the following algorithms:

Algorithm Designer(s) Key Size

(Bits) Block Size (Bits) Mode of Operation

AES J. Daemen, V. Rijmen 256 128 XTS

Serpent R. Anderson, E. Biham, L. Knudsen 256 128 XTS

Twofish B. Schneier, J. Kelsey, D. Whiting,

D. Wagner, C. Hall, N. Ferguson 256 128 XTS

AES-Twofish 256; 256 128 XTS

AES-Twofish-Serpent 256; 256; 256 128 XTS

Serpent-AES 256; 256 128 XTS

Serpent-Twofish-AES 256; 256; 256 128 XTS

Twofish-Serpent 256; 256 128 XTS

Hash Algorithms

In the Volume Creation Wizard, in the password change dialog window, and in the Keyfile Generator dialog window, you can select a hash algorithm. A user-selected hash algorithm is used by the TrueCrypt Random Number Generator as a pseudorandom "mixing" function, and by the header key derivation function (HMAC based on a hash function, as specified in PKCS #5 v2.0) as a pseudorandom function. When creating a new volume, the Random Number Generator generates the master key, secondary key (XTS mode), and salt. For more information, please see the section Random Number Generator and section Header Key Derivation, Salt, and Iteration Count.

TrueCrypt currently supports the following hash algorithms:

•RIPEMD-160

•SHA-512

•Whirlpool

But if you don't know how to use the program, ie "what does unmount mean??"

you can't really use tosend to people with a simple password prompt. like adding a password to zipped archives.

Hahah, if you get files you have, and take away all the extensions. then zip them, and take away the extension then binary copy them to a document file. or image file

passwording your zip, and then axcrypt encyrpting/toucan encrypting each file with a different password.

you can then use truecrypt and encrypt the whole lot as a mounted encryption, and then zipp the file as a .bh and remove the extension.

then someone may aswell just delete your file . _o because if it is worth all the trouble xD

..

I like how someone said in a USB encryption tutorial "and then it is encrypted so noone can access your sensitive information, and you can put your name and address on your usb, so if you lose it, a good samaratin can return it" what is the point... when you end up handing them your name and address!! :DDDDD!! HAHAHAH

siiigh...

but is there a way to make files undeletable without a password? THAT would be more useful.

also there is probably an easy way to figure out a file, without an extension; and keyloggers = password is useless.

best use of an encryption software is to make a timecapsule; not for files you regularly access.

The only real one I ever used with this capability was PGP Encryption.. You had to have a key to undo the encryption and if you tried to mess with it at all.. it disappeared... I haven't installed or used it..( with Windows 7 nor found a current version ) but was one of the best programs I had.. you could send the file to someone and if you had a copy of their key and allowed them to decrypt it.. then and only then would the information/data come about... This was the part in the story where things could get tricky..

You could do quite a bit with it.. BUT it is not portable.. and the end point recipient must have the platform as well...

But is there a windows tweak or something that password protects from file deletion? should be something simple to protect your stuff?

I mean a simple delete not like shredding or reformat or some crazy HD hydrogen bomb

Well.. You have two stages to recover a file at that point anyway... Recycle Bin.. and then you can do a drive scan and recover the deleted data... What is it are you trying to protect.. or are you just shooting scenarios to try to figure/walk through security in addressing insecurities you may have about computing itself?

seems that impossible to prevent files deletion on another comp ...

some using the autorun feature, but that is useless (you know what i means)

truecrypt have keyfiles..

I'm wondering if I want to protect my files from someone coming on my pc and just deleting shit because they want to :P

is there a way to password the file so the deletion option isn't a given.

For example if the person isn't on an administrative account they might not have the privilege idk.

Seems pretty strange you have all this security software, and virus programs and encryption when someone could just delete your stuff.

I guess they could also steal your HD but some pcs have locks and little triggers that activate to tell you your case has been opened.

But file deletion is pretty simple, I figured there was a little program that protects from file deletion in general.

Folder Protect sounds much more appealing than encryption I used JV16power tools encryption, but it lagged my pc, and stopped on the AVI movie, then i accidentally hit close (top right X) and JV16 just closed without a prompt, and my data was stuck hald encrypted, i ran unencrypt, but only a cupple came back with their names and all, the others have some hash

Like : 000009B500000EE3001110E5_decrypted

>_<

I suck at exiting during important functions lol
