Petition To Bring The Old Firefox Status Bar Functionality Back

Firefox users who are currently running version 3 of the browser will experience many different changes in the currently developed version 4 of the Internet browser. As always, some changes are welcome by almost every user, while others cause controversy, or in this case a petition to not go ahead with the change.

A petition to keep the old Firefox status bar, or at least its functionality has been posted at the user voice website. Regular readers may recall that the Mozilla development team responsible for the Firefox browser has made drastic changes in that area. The team removed the status bar from the web browser and replaced it with an add-on bar that users need to activate to use.

The add-on bar has been added to provide space for information that add-ons have placed in the status bar. But the add-on bar has three important disadvantages over the status bar:

•It does not show the connection status anymore

•Download information are not displayed on a glance anymore

•It does not display web address information when a user hovers over a link in the browser.

The team moved the web address information that are displayed on hover to the url bar at the top of the web browser. Many Firefox 4 users have installed the add-on Status 4 Evar to bring back the old functionality of the status bar. This add-on in conjunction with the add-on bar offers a similar status bar functionality.

Most commenters at the petition website mention these issues, that they cannot see “what the browser is doing when it’s being slow”, or that the url bar is not large enough to (often) show the full address of a hovered link.

Well, it is something that I will vote, but not when I need to signup in order to do so. Otherwise, I support it. Addon bar seems useless to me, or atleast, not as useful as status bar.

The only thing this might effect would be the ForecastFox Enhanced weather Extension for me.. I hide the status bar.. and I use the URL Bar for doing exactly as intended in FF4.. now but by using several extensions as well as using Stylish Scripts to show load status....as far as digging into what is holding up the load that's easy enough.. using tools which are already available.. Such as the Error Console.. and Developer extensions..

Personal opinion but I am not going to sign a petition that really holds no meaning.. especially when an extension can be made to bring it back anyway... for those who want it.. and in conjunction with that .. there are several already available... I gladly except the change and hope for the newer minimal approach.. I think truthfully this may even streamline the operational aspects of the new version... I see no harm in it...

Sorry but I love the way it is now -_- It makes the interface lot cleaner, my only regret is there's no progress bar anymore, which I hope they implement it in the address bar, like the Fission add-on. Revert back? No. Optional? Yes.

After some tweaks I like the new interface. Download status is no problem, I just look at the other window.

What is the point of petitioning it, if some add-on developer is going to create an add-on for it, anyway?

The feature inside the Firefox is quite better than a addon. A addon may slow down the browser, have compatibility problems in future, may get out of development and many other problems. I think all they need to do is keep Addon bar and keep status bar as an option. Both the sides would be satisfied by it.

Couldn't care less about the status bar personally, just takes up space. I say just leave the option to enable it.
