First Windows Phone 7 Unlock tool

When unveiling Windows Phone 7, Microsoft also launched their application download portal, Windows Phone Marketplace, which, in the same way as Apple’s App Store, centralizes applications available to users.

To install an application on a Windows Phone 7 Smartphone the user has to either obtain the program from the Marketplace or have a developer account (which allows for the testing of applications which are under development).

But that has changed now! After initially discovering how to run native code on the operating system, Chris Walsh teamed up with Long Zheng and Rafael Rivera (three well known developers) to create ChevronWP7, the first application to unlock your Windows Phone 7.This could almost be called the jailbreak system for the Windows Phone 7. The software is free, so smartphone owners, who decide to use it, will no longer be dependent of their 99$ per year Marketplace account and they will have broader access to their WP7 devices.

What does unlocking your smartphone do? It allows the sideloading of experimental applications that Microsoft would never allow on the Marketplace, including those which access private or native APIs as well as anything that breaks the guidelines the software giant has set. Microsoft only allows registered developers to unlock their device in order to sideload their apps for testing purposes.

ChevronWP7 is a completely safe and super simple executable. It will allow anyone to unlock any WP7 device on the market with the help of a USB cable and just a couple clicks. Just plug it in, and press ‘Unlock’. Yes, it’s that simple! The app even allows you to relock the phone.

In case of a connection error, the developers, posted a list of solutions on the application’s homepage. Just follow the next steps to solve your possible problem:

• Try download/install the following registry key and restart your machine then try again

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsPhone\ProxyPorts]

“DeviceReg”=dword:000069C5

• Try disconnecting, reconnecting and restarting the phone device

• Try closing Zune and restarting the “Zune Windows Mobile Connectivity Service” service (WMZuneComm.exe)

• Close any applications that might be using port 443, such as Skype or Trillian

• Please ensure your device has a “full sync” relationship with the Zune client, not a “guest” relationship
