Latest version offers easier tab management and add-on support

Opera Software has released a beta of its Opera 11 browser with a new feature called tab stacking to help users manage open tabs.

The Opera 11 beta also supports extensions, allowing the browser to support add-ons in a similar way to rival Firefox.

Tabs are a popular feature of modern browsers, allowing users to have multiple sites open and switch between them as necessary. However, some people often have so many open at a time that managing them becomes a problem.

Tab switching is Opera's answer, enabling the user to simply drag one or more tabs on top of another to save space. Hovering the mouse over the stack displays a preview image of each tab, and an expand/contract tool provides access to the tabs.

"Because so many of us wrestle with tens or even hundreds of open tabs, we needed a way to simplify tab management. Just like stacking papers for future reference, stacking your tabs is an intuitive way to organise and collect your open web pages," said Jan Standal, vice president of desktop products at Opera.

The beta also introduces extensions, browser add-ons similar to those that have proved popular in Firefox, along with a new developer mode in the browser itself to help developers build, test and package extensions quickly.

Extensions actually debuted in the alpha release of Opera 11, and more than 500,000 have been downloaded since, according to Opera, with up to new 20 extensions being added every day.

Other features updated in the beta include Opera's mouse gesture controls, a new bookmarks bar, and the ability to set plug-ins to load only when required.
