Is it somehow possible to make Google Chrome Canary Build the default web browser (on windows 7)?

Right-Click and run the program as an Administrator.. then go to settings and indicate it.. then close and open normally..

That didn't work :(, i can still read the same annoying message "This is a secondary installation of Google Chrome, and cannot be made your default browser."

Then what it is saying is that you have a previous installation still in your system.. you will have to remove/uninstall it then set it as the default.. the same way I said before.. Iron i the same way.. original installation or non-beta install will be chosen or set first..

I believe you misunderstood me. I do know how to set Google Chrome, ChromPlus, Chromium or SRWare Iron as default browsers on my system. The browser I was talking about is Google Chrome Canary Build, (it is a mix between Google Chrome Dev and Chromium, meant for testing, and i t can be run side by side with your original Google Chrome). It has been made clear, that users can not set this browser as their default. So i was wondering if somebody here, found a solution to bypass this.

You may download Canary Build here to test it yourself

And here are some picks

I see, sorry for the misunderstanding.. This article from MSDN should cover what you need to know and guide you in this task... http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd203067%28VS.85%29.aspx Unless something about the way it is written inhibits the browser or executable itself from being called or run by the System and must be started by direct user initialization.

Thanks for your help, but meanwhile I found an easy solution to this myself :) A small exe that does the job and works both on XP and 7, x86 and x64

Download it here

http://www.multiupload.com/YQF4B97XU4

Extract SetDefault_Chrome.exe in directory:

"C:\Documents and Settings\_User_Name_\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome SxS\"

or on Windows 7:

"C:\Users\_User_Name\App Data\Local\Google\Chrome SxS\"

and then run SetDefault_Chrome.exe in the specified folder

  • 5 months later...
  • 1 year later...

A very-very long time has passed since my latest post on nsaneforums. Been busy with other stuff. Hopefully I'll have time for some srt of constant activity from now on.

Let's get back to business. As IraJacobs highlighted in his post, the app that made Canary the default browser on your system, doesn't work anymore. So here is a new and simpler one. All you have to do is replace YourUsernameHere in Registry.reg with your username and you should be all set!

CanaryAsDefault.zip
