KotaXor
Hi all, Need some help. As we all know, Windows 7 sidebar once started will autorun on every startup of windows. There is no way of setting it to "Manual" as once sidebar start, it will write to registry an entry to autorun (HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Even if you delete it, it will be created once sidebar run. My intention is to make it "manual". I have created a shortcut in Context Menu to enable starting sidebar on right-click of desktop. I have also created a "RemoveSidebarReg.exe" for removing the registry entry created by sidebar. I hope to click on the 'sidebar' at Context Menu to start sidebar, at the same time it should execute "RemoveSidebarReb.exe" once to delete the registry entry created by sidebar. Any help in how to insert this into registry would be appreciate. Another way is to hack sidebar.exe using hex editor......but I am unable to find the string which lead to the autorun registry entry. Hope someone here could advise...much appreciated.

HX1
Yes and I used to be really into the Sidebar since Vista days ( I ran mine on Windows XP though.. yes the real sidebar ) .. I have 300 MB in fact of gadgets I don't use.. :P back from the HobbyLobby( dead forum ) days.. BUT if you go into .. AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows Sidebar.. and look for the Settings.ini.. You will find a listing of settings as well... IF you have ever had a crashed gadgets or Sidebar issue.. you also may need to clean out invalid entries or duplicates as well that can use for resources and also cause issues for starting gadgets.. ( not as bad as it used to be though.. )I really don't use mine anymore.. especially for system monitoring it takes too much.. ( could be the gadgets too ) BUT I have about 9 gadgets ... some useful... but all except three I have modified myself...
KotaXor
I don't have any idea but I found this on Google:Right click on the sidebar and select " Properties ".On the properties windows untick the check box showing " Start sidebar when Windows Starts "From now on windows sidebar won't start when windows 7 start up.It can be done on Vista, but in Windows 7 there isn't such an option. Try it!Of course you can totally remove gadget through control panel. The reason I want to make it manual is to prevent it from starting during bootup. HX1
There is a way.. I do know this.. have you closed all of your gadgets? If I remember right there was a TaskTray Icon that would allow you change options.. whats weird is I can't find it now ( rarely use it ).. but when I close all of them I don't worry with it?Have you checked your services area and used SpyBot to uncheck it in startup or Windows 7 Manager? I know I was able to stop it finally but I don't remember how exactly.. it does not run automatically on mine anymore..

HX1
...@heath28mthe tray icon was in Vista.No.. Actually... I know that the sidebar had an icon in 7.. I know of in two systems... Thing is I can't remember what how or why it isn't there now.. ( could be because of the run parameters whichseem to accompany it now ) ...I remember because of the color of the icon ( maybe its when you first install.. before you make settings adjustments.. ).. and yeah ALWAYS there running with Alky on Windows XP..EDIT: Dunno you may be right...just seems like I remember it being there..guess I will find out when I reinstall in my VM.. This one doesn't do it..Found this:As previously mentioned, right clicking the Desktop and going to View and unchecknig Show Desktop Gadgets, turns off the SideBar, also it won't return after a reboot either. Nor is there any sign of it running in the background in Task Manager (Applications/Processes)and this..To disable Windows sidebar simply follow these steps:Go to Control Panel and type “features” into the search box. Find the link for “Turn Windows features on or off” and open it.Remove the checkbox from Windows Gadget Platform, click the OK.But after these steps do not forget to restart your computer. HX1
Right, did you try the other one the.. first one.. It should kill it.. and you may want to also go ahead and remove the startup entries as well.. before the reboot to check..EDIT: BTW.. if it doesn't hod this setting.. it could mean that your registry is not saving when you shut down your system.. or log out.. or w/e.. You can find that out in your logs ( Event Viewer ).. but I think you probably already might know that ..
KotaXor
It does work....but you need to unchecked it prior shutting down to ensure that it would not start during the next bootup.
