What exactly do you mean by the "card died" ? If the card was fromatted from within the phone settings then it should've been formatted with FAT32 filesystem(without which you can't use it on a cellphone) or if it was formatted through an adapter connected to a PC then it might have been formatted with some other FS(NTFS/exFAT) ! So first of all you should check for the FS of the card if its FAT32 then you're fine or else you'll have to format it that way. Now if the FS is OK then look for some physical damage or check to see if any other card is working on that phone or not also see if the card is recognised under Windows(or any other OS) BTW if its still covered under warranty then you can get it replaced. If there isn't any physical damage & the FS is FAT32 then most probably the card has reached its end of life so its only trash now.

He was formatting it from the cellphone plugged at the computer. Not formatting card in the phone.

Thank you.

In that case the card was formatted through the OS so check what the FS of the card is(if possible) otherwise if the card isn't recognised in either the phone or the OS then you might have to replace it. Do note that incase of physical damage or the card having reached its end of life (read/write cycles exhausted) there isn't a way to recover it !
