Recommended Posts

Well a friend of mine just sent me this HijackThis log....thing is, I haven't been able to find anything wrong with it, with the exception of a few minor keys and therefore have no clue on what I should say to remove and what he should keep.

So I thought the best thing would be to post it here....I'm positive one of you guys might be able to help him out :P

He says he has rootkits if that helps in advance.

First off do you need all of the ATi stuff.. hotkey poller and so on..? Check to only have the ones enabled that are necessary to how you use the system..

Second Logitech.. There are several services and if you can get around starting them or running them on Boot/As a service.. you are much better off.. HUGE lag.. just with a webcam I had on XP.. secod if these services are not needed at all .. disable them.. and remove them from startup.. probably find a faster boot time even.. StyleXP is unnecessary and patching your files to use styles is much more efficient.. StyleXP is OLD as.. nevermind you get the point..

Upgrade to a GOOD AV/SPAM/Firewall Suite.. get rid of AVG.. junk IMO.. and by the tests.. Kill the YahooAU services.. and use the manual 'Check for Updates' thing or just check the site once i awhile.. been not necessary and yes is very consumptive of resources.. Stop MSN from starting up on boot as well unless you have to have it that way.. Game Guard and PunkBuster I have always seen on gamers systems.. But they always complain there is something wrong.. So I dunno.. GameMon I would check to make sure its valid.. NMIndexing Service.. I would check it out and see what it belongs to..( can't remember right now.. I think its valid though..

Whats the SpyDig?.. know? unknown program? Extra crap? - then remove it..

Now what probably is slowing down just about everything.. IE startup included and FF.. would be the Acrobat/Adobe Plugins.. They always do.. and the mDNSResponder is completely unnecessary to the existence of anything.. you have to manually remove it though usually especially if its old.. BHO's with no name should be removed.. no name and strange files.. especially within the Windows/System32 folder will be malicious 90% of the time.. SpyBot S&D will rip it out of the registry.. as long as yo kill the service involved or startup entries if they are there.. then you remove the odd named unidentifiable file manually.. and accompanying INI files if any.. ( This is not a definite indication of an attack or RootKit .. BUT you may also have to use a BartPE disc or something to boot from to remove it.. Just saying it is worth digging into ).. and grab Sophos RootKit .. its free.. or HitMan Pro.. but be careful about ripping out drivers..

Last but not least if its only experienced when you have like ten downloaders running at the same time like shown here.. try using ONE.. in one browser.. Not to mention that lock ups can occur when a file finishes and is scanned by either FF OR your protection.. along with the resources used to notify you.. ( Something to keep in mind anyway )

Quick run down... just what I see I personally .. don't like and couldn't live with.. :)

unknownasphyxiated

try Malwarebytes and SAS

this is the easiest way to detect infection

for rootkits ,i prefer Gmer and RootRepeal

scanning while in safe mode would be better

another tool i use is Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool

can detect rootkit too

GameMon.des.exe?????

Spydig.exe????

don't remove punkbuster

its important for your game unless you don't play online

As far as I have read, PnkBstrB.exe is the beta-version for PunkBuster, and it has lagged/slowed down some users, and spydig is the only one Id remove for sure. ;)
