Dead video card, or more?

Hardware specs don't really matter, nor do the OS or drivers...

BIOS: AMI

I'm sure the video card is dead, but I'm not sure whether there are more problems than that...

As stated in the description the beep sequence is: long, 8 x short (indicates that the video card is dead), pause, 2 x (high tone) short, pause, 1 x short.

Now, I've read some pages, the best of those being this one, and I think the 2 short beeps after the video card beep might indicate that the post has failed and the 1 short beep after that might indicate that the post has finished, but I'm not entirely sure.

A few 'sub'-questions:

- does the post proceed in the order given in this page? (I kind of suppose it does and if this is the case it must mean that the beeps I hear after the video card failure are what I suspect them to be.)

- should my PC, even though it doesn't post properly, still continue the boot process (and get to the logon screen, but just not show it) or should it not? (I can recognize two different phases in booting: where pressing the power buttons turn it off immediately and where it does not (holding it will only shut it down). The second does seem to be the same as when Windows is loaded, but I'm not sure...)

Final question:

do you suspect any more failures other than my video card?

use the mother board video card for while to test?

 Since when every motherboard has integrated video chip?

@shought

Well, if post failed, it's probably stopped from continuing. Maybe you can try to press F1 or something so post will maybe continue. Turn on you speakers and wait for a while. Also, check for HDD activity by looking at led indicator.

Cheers ;)

Forgot to mention that, sorry; I have no integrated graphics card, otherwise I wouldn't even have this problem :(

Will try F1, speakers won't do any good since I disabled the welcome noise (noise, yeah :P).

The HDD activity LED is blinking all the time, which is another pointer at the computer having finished posting, I just think it won't get past the 'loading Windows' process, or something.

Have you tried cleaning your video card with an eraser and inserting it back? Just in case?

I usually check if the CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK responds to try to see if Windows has finished loading even if there's no display. I also press the power button once (not hold) and see if it shuts down gracefully (not instant off), determining that Windows indeed finished up loading.

I'm sure the video card is dead, but I'm not sure whether there are more problems than that...

IMO, since I know the video card is really dead, I would change it first and only then I would know if there are more problems than that. :) If it's not a hassle to you to make another trip to the store. ;)

I'm pretty confident the beeps are what I believe them to be, I guess.

I'm buying the card online ;)

Will try caps and num.

What parts would I need to clean with an eraser?

I'm not sure what it's called, but the picture labels it Motherboard Connection.

Yep, Bizarre's right, the motherboard connection part of the card (both sides). Also, try to dust off the pci express slot. Who knows, it still might work.

An eraser, you say...

I'll try that, thanks kent and biz :)

I actually managed to ensure myself that the system does boot properly after the post error which 'must' mean that the only broken thing is the video card (very slim chance it's the mobo connector, since the video card didn't work in another PC either).

I booted, waited for the HD activity to stop, entered my password, pressed enter, waited for the HD activity to stop, pressed Windows + Right + Enter and then it booted down. I also tried playing with caps, num and scroll lock and they all worked.

I will still try cleaning it with an eraser, don't even know if we have on around the house :P (Only pens here.)

Couldn't find one, will try eraser fluid and chewing gum later ;)

New card is gonna be:

HD4650 or GT240; 50 euro or 70 euro.

What do you say? (4850 is out of the picture, uses too much power for my config. 5550 is the same price as the GT240, but it can't compete with it.)

I'm rich? Well, compared to some people most of us could be considered rich and I do consider myself 'rich' as in I have enough, but yet we never seize to want more and I don't consider myself rich in that perspective ;)

RadioActive

I'd stick with 5XXX if I were you, perhaps the 5770 or even the 5760, I believe both are decent budget cards.

You sure GT240 is better? By specifications, 5550 is better then GT240, if we are looking at GDDR5 version.

Take a look here for 5550 and here for GT240. And 5550 need much less power, and not to mention that 5550 has DirectX 11.

Cheers ;)

When my computer has a problem, ( that happened a few months ago because of a Video Card too) I take it to the store, they check in front of me what is wrong, they do all the work at that moment and I just pay the cost of the new piece of hardware , nothing else.

But I am an old customer... this way, they know I´ll return next time. :)

So, I got some eraser fluid and chewing gum but it didn't do any good either. I've already got my new card so it isn't much of an issue anymore :)
