"Search Titles Only" not working

Searching can be very frustrating ever since the recent update. For example, if I use the Advanced Search and "Search titles only" I see this when searching for "image" (no quotes)

4r5lb8.png

(only 1 of 76 results is shown — following pages are empty). And I see this when searching for "Adobe" (no quotes) with "Search titles only"

25g6ryf.png

(only 1 of 147 results shown).

Also, searching for a quoted string is problematic. For example, searching for the 17-character quoted string "image for windows" results in

Why is a quoted string being parsed? I want an exact match of the 17 characters I specified.

Search Titles Only is a bug. I think Lite has already notified the IPB guys about it. Would probably be fixed in next update. You can try keeping the Display Results at As a topic list (search titles only unchecked), until the problem is fixed.

I cannot understand about the "image for windows" problem you are having. Try removing "for" from it. Any word in the search box that is less than 4 letters will give that error.

If you have any other problems or bugs, please notify us so that it can be fixed in time. :)

Thanks for the info. Hopefully, searching will get fixed soon.

Image for Windows is a product. I know it was posted here before. If I remove the "for" as you suggested, "image windows" comes back with no results. :frusty: If I don't search by title, I just get four results for "R-drive Image 4.x Build YYYY" :frusty:

A quoted string search should take all the characters I typed — including spaces — and find an exact match on that complete string.

EDIT: Hmmm, a google search for

"Image for Windows" site:nsaneforums.com

finds the page I cannot find within nsane. Grrrrr. :frusty:

EDIT 2: Right under "Find words" it says:

Tip: Search for a specific phrase by "enclosing it in quotes"

but this doesn't work.

EDIT 3: Oh, you mentioned 'Display Results at As a topic list', but I'm already doing that.

Yea the built in search feature blows big time. I'll let you in on my secret, I use Bing! Yes that's right I use Bing instead of Google for searching on our forums. :D

In the words of Steve Jobs: It just works! There is a special way to do it, let me show you.

In the bing search bar type the following and press enter:

site:nsaneforums.com image for windows

that's all there is to it. :) have fun till IPS decides to make the search more useful.

Only problem you will get is bing can't crawl certain parts of the forum that requires user logon like software chat so I guess there is only so much you could really get out of it. :(

You searching for this? :D

Wasn't hard. Didn't used any quote tags. Searched only for Image Windows without quotes. Arranged it as per title and ascending. And the last item came was  the above one.

Even Google shows it:

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=site%3Ansaneforums.com+%22Image+for+Windows%22

Anyway, you still make the best use of search. :)

EDIT: Didn't see Leetpirate's reply. :(

That's not quite right. The last item is this:

Yeah, that's what I said. There's an echo in here, there's an echo in here, there's an echo in here, ... :D

Yeah, the best use of search is to use Google or Bing. Seriously. :o :(

The Software Chat is visible to crawlers now ;) (@LeetPirate)

IPB search has sucked ever since 3.0.0. The IPB 2.x search was way better and I still don't understand why they decided to fuck it up.

Use Google search (as said before, as said befo-. as sai-, as-).

The IPB guys know about this, but they're only fixing the small bugs within the big bug: they fix all the minor issues with the search, but they don't fix 'the search', which is just completely screwed up.

I'm not sure about what I'm going to say now but I think it is possible to replace the IPB search with a Google search box  We might have to do that :P (Not being serious, that would be a LOT of trouble.)

ps indeed quote searching is fucked up and I get the feeling they're not intending to fix this.

Didn't know that, this is very good news especially for SEO and getting new people to join.

Even though I've seen some bigger boards replace their vbulletin search with a google box I don't really like it. My friends over at modmymoto did that and in my opinion a google box inside your site is like an ugly freaking out of place advertisement. The only reason I could think of that they did that is possibly the server load and db queries were too much because the vbulletin search seemed to work quite well prior.

In our case we have a sleek sexy looking search box that don't work, :D kinda like a hot blonde trophy wife. :P And you're right about the version change messing it up because I remember actually using the search on the old IPB and it used to give relevant results, now not any more.

Yes, DKT27 used to call me the search master here at nsane, but now searching is almost useless. Oh wait a minute ...
